SELINSGROVE, PA - A quiet first half was swiftly forgotten about when goals dominated the third and fourth quarter in Tuesday night's non-conference matchup between Susquehanna and Alvernia. A 1-1 fourth-quarter tie was undone with a pair of quick River Hawks scores to send the home team out with a 3-1 victory.
First-year
Mady Quigley put the River Hawks ahead early in the third quarter following a penalty corner that was assisted by
Alli Kiley. The Golden Wolves may have stunned Susquehanna in the moment with a game-tying goal in the fourth quarter by Gianna DeGregory, but little did they know that the score triggered a three-minute stretch of goals. Susquehanna carried out the majority of this goal-scoring stretch when
Kari Schmidt swept in the go-ahead goal on her knees less than one minute later, followed by junior
Isa Napoli burying a shot from dead center in front of the net just over two minutes later for her first career goal and the game-clincher.
The River Hawks picked up their fifth straight win over the Golden Wolves dating back to 2019 to improve to 7-4 on the year. Playing one player up due to a Golden Wolves green card, Susquehanna used a penalty corner to deliver the first blow early in the third. Quigley inserted the ball, then moved in front of the net where
Alli Kiley blasted it and was picked up by Quigley's stick to go up 1-0 with 12:13 remaining in the third. Things seemed to be going in the River Hawks' favor for most of the match, finishing with 15 penalty corners to Alvernia's two, along with SU's 25 shots on goal to AU's 12. Things almost got more interesting when
Kari Schmidt lined up for a penalty stroke late in the third quarter, though it missed wide.
Alvernia got some rhythm going halfway through the fourth, pressing the ball deep in Susquehanna's end. They got the hi sign to set up their second penalty corner of the day, which they leveraged to tie the game when Olivia Hess' insert met the stick of Kathryn Palmer, who fed an open DeGregory on the near post and rifled it to the cage to tie things up with 7:13 remaining. Any Alvernia celebration was cut short as Susquehanna swiftly moved down the other side of the field, leading to a penalty corner with Schmidt on the insert. She moved the ball up to Quigley, who sent a shot that was blocked by the keeper. Schmidt grabbed the rebound and threw it back to goalie Lexi Boettcher, who knocked it back towards Schmidt and delivered it through while on her knees for the dramatic go-ahead score. When it appeared the excitement died down from the goal, SU's third goal erupted the crowd once more as Quigley's cross from the near side was deflected away by Boettcher, which bounced right to
Isa Napoli straight in front of the cage. Napoli gathered the ball and gave it a rip for SU's largest lead of the game and the final touch on the victory.
Goalkeeper
Taytum Lombardi got the start and the win, recording three saves as she improved to 4-1 on the year. Schmidt upped her season stats to 12 points on four goals and four assists for second on the team, while Quigley rose to third on the team with nine points on three goals and three assists.
