Header Goal Spells Difference in Women's Soccer's Defeat at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Wednesday night featured a Landmark Conference women's soccer contest that lived up to its billing in Susquehanna's road matchup at Catholic University of America. While both sides were matched evenly, with the River Hawks absorbing every blow the Cardinals had to offer, the difference was a first-half header by CUA's Payton Hardy off a free kick from Teighan Boyle in the 34th minute.

First-year goalkeeper Katie Henchy posted five saves for Susquehanna on an evening where Catholic flicked six shots on goal to the River Hawks' two. The Cardinals also led 10-3 in total shots. SU tried to rebound in the second half where they had both their shots on goal. The first was in the 70th minute where Ava Billmeyer sent a shot to the center of the goal, but was met by Cardinals keeper Ava Rieger. Their one other chance was in the 87th minute where fellow first-year Amelia Kopp sent one towards the net, though saved again by Rieger. The night also marked the second time this season that Susquehanna did not receive a corner kick opportunity, with the one other time occuring in their season opener against Misericordia. Catholic, meanwhile, had two corner kick chances, both were turned away by the River Hawks' defense.

The matchup resulted in Susquehanna moving to 4-6-2 overall on the season and 0-2-1 in Landmark play, while Catholic earned its first conference win of the season to go 1-1-1 in the Landmark and 4-4-2 overall. The River Hawks set their sights on another bird to get back in the win column this Saturday, heading to Elizabethtown Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup against the Blue Jays. They then are back home for two straight games, beginning with Goucher Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. then Moravian Saturday as part of homecoming in a special 4 p.m. evening time slot.
