PITTSBURGH, PA (November 9, 2024) - The Susquehanna University women's basketball team defeated Penn College in a 75-43 route Saturday afternoon for their first win of the season to close out their two-day stay at the Chatham University Tournament.
The team dominated both offensively and defensively all game and it started by jumping out to a 24-13 after the first quarter. The River Hawks shot 8-12 (66.67%) from the field and 4-5 (80%) from three, thanks to seven early points from Lauren Klein, six from Zoie Maffei, and two three-pointers off the bench from Annie Greek.
The lead grew to 21 with 5:42 remaining in the second spearheaded by Julia Pinckert, who scored eight points early in the quarter with back-to-back three-pointers and a layup on the fast break. Both teams went back and forth the rest of the half as Susquehanna took a 42-22 lead into the break.
The River Hawks had their lowest offensive output in the third quarter with 5-20 (25%) shooting from the field and 1-6 (16.67%) shooting from three, but still managed to outscore the Wildcats 13-12 in the quarter by holding them to just 4-13 (30.77%).
Despite the big lead, Susquehanna finished the game with a dominant fourth quarter defensively as Penn College scored just nine points on 1-12 (8.33%) shooting. With the bench unit in the game for most of the way, the River Hawks added another 20 points with Greek and Sydney Weyant leading the way to finish off the 75-43 win.
Off the bench, Greek led the River Hawks in scoring with on 6-10 shooting, including 3-5 from downtown. Pinckert, Klein, and Carly George also scored in double figures with Pinckert scoring 13 points on 5-12 shooting while also grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out three assists, and tallying three steals all in just 19 minutes. Klein finished with 12 points and five rebounds and George finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Defensively, Susquehanna held the entire Penn College team to just 13 made field goals and just one three-pointer all afternoon.
The team improves to 1-1 on the season, securing a split in the Chatham University Tournament, and will now return to O.W. Houts Gymnasium on Nov. 13 to take on Eastern University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
