SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna women's basketball held a few first-half leads, trailed by just one at half-time and had the game tied at 30-30 early in the third quarter, but a 25-0 run by 24th-ranked Catholic saw them erase the River Hawks' hopes of victory.
The River Hawks shot 36.0 percent from the field, 18-for-50, and 4-for-17 from three, but the visitors attempted 17 more shots on the back of 20 steals and and forcing 29 turnovers as the Cardinals had 29 points off turnovers to the River Hawks' 16. Catholic managed to shoot 40.3 percent from the floor, 27-67, along with 6-20 on threes.
The teams traded blows in the first half, with back-to-back three-pointers by
Kenzie Selvaggi and a free throw by
Grace Meehan seeing the River Hawks go on a 7-2 run to end the first two periods. The team almost had a lead to end the first quarter up 14-12, but a last-second 3-pointer by Amelia Kennedy gave the Cardinals a breath of oxygen to lead 15-14 after the first ten minutes. Holding a similar one-point margin at halftime 26-25, the Cardinals managed more points in the third quarter than they managed in the entire first half, with a 29-7 advantage in the period, including a 25-0 run that saw them go ahead 55-30. Only a late layup by
Lauren Klein was enough to end the run.
The River Hawks made up ground in the fourth frame, including eight fourth-quarter points each from Klein and sophomore
Sydney Weyant, but it wasn't enough as when the final horn sounded, the scoreboard read a 66-52 defeat for Susquehanna.
Weyant and Klein led the River Hawks with 12 points apiece, while Selvaggi also contributed with ten.
Carly George led Susquehanna with eight rebounds, as they won the overall rebound battle 42-34. Meehan also added a pair of assists and six rebounds.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, when they take on another ranked Landmark foe in number-25 Elizabethtown at O.W. Houts Gymnasium, tipping off at 2 p.m. They drop to 4-2 overall and costed them just their first Landmark defeat of the season at 2-1.
