SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna women's basketball staged a furious third-quarter rally to put 25th-ranked Elizabethtown in a pinch entering the fourth quarter. After a 20-point third quarter that outscored the River Hawks' entire first-half scoring total, just four points separated Susquehanna from the Blue Jays, trailing 41-37. E-Town, however, was able to carry its momentum to a 62-53 victory, helped by a 17-point performance from Summer McNulty.
Julia Pinckert was just one point behind McNulty on the points leaderboard with 16, making 6-of-9 from the floor with one 3-pointer and three rebounds. The River Hawks' starters were the five highest scorers for Susquehanna, with
Sydney Weyant collecting nine points with one three, while
Grace Meehan connected for nine points also, including an and-one late in the game that represented her lone free throw of the day as she made four field goals. Zoei Maffei and
Annie Greek each gathered six points, with Maffei tied for the game high with nine rebounds alongside E-Town's Jess King.
Susquehanna's electrifying third quarter was bolstered by a 9-of-15 performance shooting, including a pair of threes, whereas Elizabethtown managed a modest 16 points for the quarter on 6-of-16 shooting. The Blue Jays cranked up the scoring for the fourth, outscoring the River Hawks 21-16 in the final ten minutes. E-Town's Cyleigh Wilson crept into the double-digit scoring prior to game's end with 11 points. On the boards it was relatively even, yet the Blue Jays held the advantage 33-31.
In all both sides shot nearly similar, with Elizabethtown holding the field goal percentage edge at 41.8 (23-55) to Susquehanna's 39.6 (19-48). The River Hawks outgained the Blue Jays in 3-point shooting, making 4-of-13 3PFG to E-Town's sub-par 1-of-13 from beyond the arc. On free throws both sides had their fair share, with Elizabethtown making 15-of-20 to Susquehanna's 11-of-14.
Saturday's home contest marks the last game for the River Hawks for the next ten days, finishing an adverse week where they played two top-25 Landmark opponents that included #24 Catholic on Wednesday. Nevertheless, these early ranked games gives Susquehanna confidence entering winter break, where they'll have four noteworthy non-conference games hosting Misericordia Tuesday, Dec. 17, then off to the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas where they'll play Colorado College Saturday, Dec. 28 and Wittenberg Sunday, Dec. 29. When they return to the east coast they'll travel to face #12 Gettysburg Saturday, Jan. 4 before settling back into their Landmark slate starting at Drew Wednesday, Jan. 8.
