WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Susquehanna men's basketball team struggled to find their rhythm on the road on Wednesday night, suffering a tough Landmark Conference loss to Catholic University, 75-51. It marked the teams' first meeting since squaring off for the Landmark Championship back in February.
Three-point shooting was the difference maker of the showdown in the Nation's Capital as Susquehanna couldn't match the 10 three-pointers made by defending Landmark champion Catholic. The River Hawks shot an uncharacteristic 5-22 from three and the Cardinals' efficient shooting night was too much. Turnovers also served as costly for the River Hawks as they turned the ball over four more times than the victor.
The River Hawks did come out strong in the first half, maintaining a one-possession game until the four-minute mark. Their strong defensive presence held Catholic to just 21 points in those 16 minutes.
Though the River Hawks entered the half with a seven-point deficit,
Cooper Haberern's three-point sharpshooting kept the game competitive. Haberern, who tallied a team-high 14 points, made three from behind the arc in the second half. Coming off of the bench, he had four of the team's five made three-pointers and served as a spark in the struggling River Hawks offense. Assisted by Haberern, the bench of Susquehanna had a stellar showing, scoring 30 of the team's 51 total points.
Junior guard
Jackson Van Wagener stayed consistent for the River Hawks offense, scoring 11 points on 45.5% shooting while also adding five rebounds to his performance.
Audric Washington contributed on both ends of the floor, adding six points on 42.9% shooting, securing four rebounds, and blocking a game-high three shots.
A 3-3 start for the River Hawks falls short of preseason expectations-- entering the season selected first in the Landmark Preseason Poll while Catholic was ranked second, but they have the chance to turn things around on Saturday. They host Elizabethtown College in a pivotal Landmark Conference matchup, their first home game in nearly three weeks.
