DALLAS, PA – Fresh off a high-scoring, lopsided win over the weekend, the Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team needed as many goals as they could score Wednesday night at Misericordia, doing so with a hard-fought 9-8 win over the Cougars.
One goal was scored in the opening quarter, coming from Misericordia's Brendan Staley in the first three minutes. The River Hawks responded with four straight goals to open the second quarter, two from
Connor Aitken, one from
Nick Remund, and the last of these four coming on a coast-to-coast cruiser by
Ted Zaborowski that goalie
Jozef Korpics received an assist, that put the Hawks up 4-1. Misericordia, though, would not cower to Susquehanna's opening charge, answering with two straight to close the half at 4-3, making it anyone's game.
The River Hawks attempted to dispel any Misericordia comeback magic as they went up by three again to open the third quarter off goals from
Steven Musser and Aitken at 6-3 with 12:59 left. But the Cougars made a complete tilt by ending the quarter with four goals to pounce on a 7-6 lead going into the fourth.
Goalie Korpicz, who ended the day with 14 saves, saved perhaps his best performance for the fourth quarter, allowing just one fourth-quarter goal, which proved to be just enough for Susquehanna's fire power to overcome. That one Misericordia score followed Remund's second goal of the day to put the Cougars back in front 8-7 with 9:43 remaining. Three minutes later
Jimmy Maro brushed off two defenders to tie the game at eight, then with three minutes remaining
Matthew Faggioli pulled off a series of move to get around the coverage, jumping and firing a shot in mid air that proved to be the game winner.
Aitken had three goals on the day, while Remund posted two and one each from Musser, Faggioli, Maro, and Zaborowski. Korpicz, Gaillard, and Lorence each had one assist. Korpicz' performance in goal was matched by the Cougars' Chris Dindino, who piled up 22 saves on a night where the River Hawks outshot their hosts 45-37, including 31-22 in shots on goal.
The River Hawks head back out on the road this Saturday at Shenandoah at 1:30 p.m.
