Lorence's Five-Goal Day Helps Men's Lax to OT Win at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, VA (March 2, 2024) – Visiting Virginia for the second time in the early part of the season, the Susquehanna men's lacrosse team turned in a strong performance to take a win in another dramatic contest, this time needing overtime but coming away with a 10-9 win over Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon.

The River Hawks were piloted by an outstanding performance from Brennan Lorence, who tallied five goals and served as a focal point for the offense throughout the day, racking up 21 of SU's 53 total shots. After falling behind 2-0 early, Lorence scored once in the first quarter before tying the game midway through the second quarter, netting once more a few minutes later after Jack Gaillard scored to give Susquehanna their first lead of the day.

Leading 4-2 at halftime, the River Hawks came out of the break hot, immediately taking the first faceoff into the attacking end and scoring, with Nick Remund scoring on a Gaillard helper. Shenandoah fired back just over three minutes later, but Remund found the back of the net again on a man advantage play just over a minute later, assisted by Kieran Thomas. Lorence scored his third goal later in the quarter, giving Susquehanna their biggest lead at four goals.

The Hornets would not go quietly, scoring the next four goals without reply, tying the game at 7-7 with 9:25 to go in the fourth quarter. Thomas scored on a Gaillard assist to put SU back on top just thirty seconds later, then seeing Lorence score his fifth shortly after. But Shenandoah once again mounted a response, coming through with two goals in less than three minutes after both teams went scoreless for more than five minutes prior. Tying the game at 9 each with 51 seconds left, regulation would end with a pair of SU shots going wide of the net before the buzzer.

The River Hawks got the win in overtime on the stick of Connor Aitken, who scored off a pass from Steven Musser after Jozef Korpics made a clutch safe at the other end to keep the game alive. He finished the day with eight saves and earned the win.

Lorence pushed his season goal tally up to 12 in the first four games of the season, having surpassed 100 career goals in SU's last game and now up to 108 in his career. Gaillard finished the day with a goal and two assists, continuing his strong start to the season as he has tallied 13 points, tying Lorence for the team lead. The River Hawks would hold the advantage in multiple key statistical categories, winning the ground ball battle 40-21 and faceoffs 16-6. They would also achieve a 100 percent clear rate at 23 of 23.

Now 3-1 overall, the River Hawks will finally get to take to home turf on Wednesday, March 6 for their home opener against Immaculata University. The game will begin at 4 pm at Sassafras Field.
