SELINSGROVE, PA – It was a long time coming for Susquehanna men's lacrosse's home opener against Immaculata Wednesday afternoon after a four-game road trip to start the season. The River Hawks paid their anxious fans back with interest in a 15-6 over the Mighty Macs, extending their win streak to four games to go to 4-1 on the season.
While Immaculata answered Susquehanna's early charge of a
Kieran Thomas goal, assisted by
Jack Gaillard for the first of his eight-point, six-assist day, with a Matthew Frame equalizer with 8:30 remaining, the River Hawks proceeded to score eight goals unanswered over the course of the first, second, and third periods. Gaillard played a role in SU's next two goals on assists, the first a feed to
Connor Aitken to end the first quarter up 2-1, then teaming up with Thomas again to start the second quarter up 3-1. Thomas came back for more with the third goal of the day minutes later to extend their lead to 4-1, while
JP Jones,
Rob McCullough, and
Nick Remund each added to the scoring list to go into halftime up 7-1.
Thomas opened the second half with the last of his four-goal game just over one minute into the third quarter with an assist from Gaillard. On the ensuing faceoff, specialist
Jared Tavernite picked up another faceoff win to add to his 11-of-13 day, then proceeded to make a b-line to the net for his first career goal and add to the River Hawks' lead to 9-1. Immaculata ended its silence when DeFilippo found David Azzarano with 12:21 left in the third. It did little to curb Susquehanna, who by this time turned to their depth to add to their lead. Gaillard used his last two assists of the evening to find new playmakers in
Jimmy Maro and
Dominic Contella, along with providing a pair of goals of his own, assisted by
Matthew Faggioli and
Steven Musser.
Brennan Lorence, who remained relatively quiet through the first three quarters, found the back of the net from an Aitken assist, adding to his career total with 109 goals, 14 away from the school record. Ahead 14-4 late in the game,
JP Jones capped the scoring with his second of the season, assisted by
Lucas Biddiscombe.
The River Hawks seized on two of their four extra-man opportunities, while Susquehanna's defense kept Immaculata off the board when a pair of River Hawks combined for two minutes in the cage. The day ended with Susquehanna ahead 52-32 in shots, including 31-17 in shots on goal. Goalie Jozef Korpicz logged ten saves with just three goals allowed in 42 minutes of play to pick up the win, while giving way to
Augie Granatelli, who had one save and one goal allowed in nearly 12 minutes in goal and
TJ Lynch presiding over the last six-and-a-half minutes in goal. Wednesday also kept with the River Hawks' trend this season allowing no more than nine goals to their opponents.
Head coach
Stewart Moan's team returns to the road this Saturday for an afternoon matchup at Haverford at 1 p.m. After that they are back home next Wednesday, Mar. 13 as they welcome Lebanon Valley for a 4 p.m. matinee.
