WILKES-BARRE, PA – The SU Men's Lacrosse Express made a stop at Wilkes University on Saturday, breezing to a 22-6 victory in tune to the windy conditions. The Landmark Conference victory gives the River Hawks their sixth straight win to remain atop the conference standings with a 6-0 league record and 12-2 overall, tying the program record for season wins.
Figuratively speaking, Susquehanna had the wind to its backs, racing out to an early 5-0 lead. While the host Colonels threatened with two straight, Susquehanna got back to work with seven straight and nine of the next ten to go into halftime up 14-3. They added to this stretch with four more to start the third quarter to go up 18-3 and scored four of the next seven in a more subdued second half. Two of Susquehanna's goals came on extra-man opportunities and outshot Wilkes 56-20 in shots, including 39-15 in shots on goal. The River Hawks were successful on 19-of-20 clear attempts to Wilkes' 17-of-23, while winning 22 faceoffs to the Colonels' eight.
Brennan Lorence and
Jack Gaillard each led the goal scoring with five apiece, while Gaillard added three assists for an eight-point day. Lorence tied the career points record with 182 set by Austin Lein (2011-14).
Nick Remund was next on the scoring list with four goals, along with one goal each from
JP Jones,
Noah Trala,
Connor Aitken,
Jason Carey,
Ben Polich,
Kieran Koenke,
Kieran Thomas, and
Mike Rowinski.
Steven Musser tied with Gaillard for the game high in assists with three, along with a pair of assists each from
Rob McCullough and
Pat McDermott and one apiece by Thomas and
Matthew Faggioli.
Jozef Korpics started and played the first half, registering four saves with three goals allowed to pick up the win to improve to 12-2.
Augie Granatelli took over in the third quarter, totaling three saves with one goal allowed, while
TJ Lynch presided over goal in the fourth with two saves and two goals allowed. For the second straight game
Garrett Laub took the majority of the faceoffs, winning 18-of-25, while
Jason Carey went 4-of-5 in the faceoff circle.
The River Hawks' dozen victories to date marks the fifth time they have reached such heights, all coming under the watch of head coach
Stewart Moan, now in his 17th season. The four others include the 2013 Landmark championship season, as well as 2015, 2016, and 2018. With a Landmark Tournament berth in hand, the River Hawks have three games left of the regular season, hosting Goucher this Wednesday for a 4 p.m. first draw, then the last two going up against last year's Landmark finalists in defending champion Scranton on the road Saturday, April 20 then Elizabethtown at home on Senior Day Saturday, April 17.
