SELINSGROVE, PA (April 13, 2024) - The Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team blew out the Wilkes University Colonels 17-4 on Saturday afternoon as the River Hawks honored eight seniors on Senior Day.
Susquehanna put their foot on the gas early, jumping out to a 10-0 lead after the first period. Seniors Heather Riefenhauser, Kelsey Homberg, and Caitlin Harvey all found the back of the net, as well as juniors Liv Owen, Allie Kutler, and Emma Kelleher. Meanwhile on defense, the River Hawks held the Colonels to zero shots and forced seven turnovers on defense.
The second period was the complete opposite as the River Hawks managed just two goals from Madi Mitchell and Wavery-Oake Libow early on, making it 12-0. That score held until the final two minutes of the half when Wilkes finally got on the board to make it 12-1 at the break.
Susquehanna scored the first four goals of the third period with another senior, Abbey Alex, scoring one of them. Defensively the River Hawks continued to dominate with another six turnovers forced and holding Wilkes to just three shots. The Colonels managed a second goal with 2:13 remaining to make it 16-2 going into the final period.
The River Hawks scored only one goal in the fourth, courtesy of Ruby Calabrese, on six shot attempts while Wilkes scored two to bring it to the final score of 17-4.
Kelleher led the team with six points on two goals and four assists while Owen and Riefenhauser tied for second finishing two goals and two assists each. In total six of the eight seniors tallied a point on the afternoon, and as a team Susquehanna outshot Wilkes 32-14, grabbed more groundballs 26-11, and forced 23 turnovers.
The win brings the River Hawks to 9-5 on the season and 3-3 in the Landmark Conference. They will hit the road for their next game on Wednesday April 17 against Goucher College. The game will start at 4 p.m.
