HUNTINGDON, PA - Susquehanna's comeback effort fell just short in a midweek Landmark Conference matchup with Juniata, falling 5-4 despite home runs from
Michael Mancuso and
Jack Cahill.
The River Hawks fell four runs behind in the first inning, Juniata putting together a rally off starter
Adam Stuck, who was saddled with the loss after throwing just one inning.
Aidan Martin came in to relieve him, and allowed zero earned in four innings of work, but a run came across on his line, unearned in the third after a Juniata player reached on an error.
Mancuso led off the fifth with a solo shot to right center field, his team-best fifth of the year, to finally break the shutout.
Sean McCulloch followed him with a double, but the River Hawks were unable to eat further into the 5-1 deficit in the fifth frame, the outfielder stranded there.
After back-to-back singles by
Dylan Heyduk and
Tyler Hmielewski, they executed a double steal to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out.
Griffin Shenman plated Heyduk with a sacrifice fly. Mancuso reached again with an infield hit, then reached second on a wild pitch, but he and Hmielewski were stranded at second and third after a flyout by McCulloch.
After going down quietly in the seventh and eighth, Cahill provided a two-run dinger in the top of the ninth to cut the gap to one, but that was it for the River Hawks as they were unable to add any futher offense.
Despite outhitting the Eagles 10-8 and stealing six bases, including a conference-best 32nd for McCulloch as he swiped third in the ninth, the River Hawks were tripped up by Juniata and fall to 16-20 on the season. They drop to 12-9 in the Landmark with just three games to go, a three-game set against Wilkes at Harold Bollinger Field this weekend. They'll complete their season at York (PA) on April 30th.
