SELINSGROVE, PA – It was a Herculean task for Susquehanna's men's tennis team squaring off against Landmark front-runner Goucher on Thursday. While little could be done to get in the way of another Gophers victory, a lot came out of first years
Daniel Murphy and
Owen Miller to extend the contest well past two hours in the singles matches.
Murphy earned the River Hawks a win in the six singles spot against Manny Vidal, taking the first set 6-4 and overcoming a rally attempt by Vidal late in the second set. Ahead 6-5 in the frame and at match points at 40-love, Vidal rallied back to tie the match at 6-6 to force the seven-point tiebreaker. Vidal opened with a 4-0 lead, only for Murphy to run off seven straight to win 7-6 (4). Miller fought Benedikt Rummel at three singles. Despite a narrow 7-5 defeat in set one, Miller bounced back to take set two, 6-4, although Benedikt took the final frame 10-7.
The River Hawks wrap up their Landmark Conference season at 2-7, with a 5-10 overall mark. They have two more matches this weekend on the home front to wrap their season, welcoming McDaniel Saturday on Senior Day and King's (Pa.) on Sunday.
