Box Score YORK, PA (April 30, 2024) - Tony Rossi went 4-for-5 including two doubles and a home run and earned his first career win as Susquehanna baseball took down York (PA) in a back-and-forth 11-10 decision on Tuesday afternoon.
The River Hawks did not take long to add their first run of the day, with
Sean McCulloch walking to lead off the game, advancing to third on a Rossi double, and scoring on an RBI groundout by junior
Joe Healy.
However, the Spartans started their day off with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, coming on six hits including a double and a triple.
Evan Applegate got the start for the River Hawks, allowing five earned in 2.1 innings in his first career start. He was relieved by
Kieran Dougherty, who got five outs while not allowing a run.
In the second inning,
Tyler Hmielewski singled to left, advanced to second after a failed pickoff resulted in a throwing error, stole third, and came home to score when
Michael Gagliardi grounded into a double play.
The River Hawks tied the game at 4-4 in the third,
Michael Biuso reaching on a single before advancing to third on Rossi's second double of the game. Healy, batting directly after Rossi, also doubled, scoring Biuso and Rossi. York added a run in the bottom half of the third.
Rossi led off the top of the fifth with a solo shot, his fifth home run of the season and the 17th of his career. The River Hawks added another run in the sixth, Biuso bringing in Gagliardi on a sacrifice fly.
They added three runs in the seventh, with
Griffin Shenman doubling to score
Dylan Heyduk. He came around to score on a pinch-hit home run by
Jack Cahill to give the River Hawks a 9-5 advantage.
York wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring five runs in the eighth to take a 10-9 lead.
However, the River Hawks rallied, with Hmielewski scoring on another failed pickoff attempt, this time by the catcher.
Chris Orrego scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on an infield hit by McCulloch.
Rossi slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth to bring the River Hawks to .500 on the season at 20-20. They enter the Landmark Conference playoffs next week.Â
