SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna women's soccer opened their 2024 season at home against Misericordia, a team who received votes in the national poll to start the season. The River Hawks were dealt an 8-0 defeat at the hands of the Cougars, who split four goals between each half.
The River Hawks held strong for the first 11 minutes, but in the 12th minute, the deadlock was broken when Esabella Mendola found the net, followed by Emma Sweitzer contributing the first of her hat-trick evening to double the score two minutes later. Sweitzer came back around ten minutes later to make the score three-nil, then Haleigh Wintersteen closed out the first-half scoring with another score one minute later. Susquehanna first-year Katie Hency presided over goal throughout the whole match, earning ten saves on a night where Misericordia led 25-1 in shots.
Morgan Stickley represented SU's lone shot attempt, while 20 Cougar shots found the target.
Susquehanna will take this experience playing up against a nationally-known program as they look to find its winning ways this Sunday traveling to Haverford for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
