SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna men's soccer suffered their first defeat of 2024 on Tuesday night under the lights, dropping a 4-0 decision on home turf to York (PA) that saw the Spartans score a pair in each half.
The game started with the River Hawks applying the pressure, with a shot by
Angelo Zografos saved by the York stopper. However, the Spartans scored with their second shot of the night, breaking quickly on a counter-attack and scoring through Noah Roche in the 18th minute.
Six minutes later, the visitors doubled their tally when a cross from Luke Nall found the head of Tyler Howlett, whose effort deflected in past
Santiago Andino in the Susquehanna goal to make it 2-0.
At the half-time interval, the Spartans held a 5-2 advantage on shots, and went on to take 18 shots on the night to the home side's six. The visitors also had a 9-4 edge on corners and committed 18 fouls to the River Hawks' 10.
As the game neared its conclusion, York added a pair of goals in the 87th minute, one coming from a corner that was poked in from close quarters by Gavin Huey, and a fourth goal on the night coming from the penalty spot.
In the loss, Andino made a career-high seven saves, one higher than the six he made against the same opponent a year ago. Zografos contributed with one shot, forcing a save, while
Max Paczewski took two, finding the target with one.
Tom O'Keefe tallied a pair of shots, and
Khalil McDonald sent a shot off target in the 65th minute.
Susquehanna looks to put the Tuesday non-conference match behind them when they return to competition this Satruday at home against Shenandoah at 2 p.m.
