Men's Soccer Beats Shenandoah, Goes 4-for-5 to Start Season

SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna men's soccer claimed a 3-2 win over Shenandoah on Saturday, improving to 4-1 on the season. Goals from Max Paczewski, Hayden Swinehart, and Tom O'Keefe propelled them to the win.

The first two opportunities came and went for the Hornets before the River Hawks scored with their first shot of the night. Clay Yannazzone played a ball onto the right wing for John Kuderka to chase, and the junior received the ball and placed a cross on the head of Paczewski, who converted the chance into his sixth goal in five games in the 16th minute.

In the 42nd minute, Shenandoah were reduced to ten players with a red card for Nick Mattiace, giving the River Hawks an advantage in numbers for the remainder of the game.

The River Hawks doubled their lead in the 62nd minute when Paczewski played a cross-field ball to Swinehart, who did the rest, dribbling forward and sliding a finish into the bottom right corner to make it 2-0.

The Hornets were able to claw a goal back, however, as despite being down a player, they converted a corner, of which they had a 9-6 advantage on the day, into a goal, with Nathan Yared heading past Tony Burns in the Susquehanna net.

The one-goal gap did not remain for long, as just two minutes later, Paczewski teamed up with Swinehart again, who turned provider this time, teeing up O'Keefe for the third goal, with the senior midfielder firing into the top right corner past the outstretched arms of the Shenandoah stopper.

Shenandoah closed the gap to one a second time, however, as Yared got his second of the day, putting in a shot from close range after a pair of shots rebounded off Burns and Kuderka on the goal-line.

The game finished after the three goals in the final seven minutes with the River Hawks claiming their fourth win on the year, already surpassing their total from 2023. The River Hawks outshot their visitors 12-11, but the Hornets had a 9-5 edge in shots on target and committed ten fouls to the River Hawks' seven. The River Hawks are next in action on Tuesday as they head up to Elmira for an 8 p.m. kickoff.
