Final-Minute Score Drops Susquehanna at Dickinson

CARLISLE, PA (September 11, 2024) - Susquehanna field hockey dropped a topsy-turvy 3-2 affair at Dickinson on Wednesday at Biddle Field Complex. The hosting Red Devils won their first contest of the season after falling in their first three contests.

Three goals were scored in the final six minutes of the game, two by the Red Devils to secure the victory. With the game deadlocked at 1-all, Emma Campitelli scored for the River Hawks (1-2) in the 54th minute on a rebound. It was the junior midfielder's first goal of the season and sixth of her career.

Four minutes later, Dickinson's Becca Woods slotted a penalty stroke into the top left corner of cage to even the score for the Red Devils (1-3). From there, the game seemed destined for overtime.

That was until the final twenty seconds of regulation, when Erin Liggio emerged from a flurry of activity around the cage and poked the ball across the line to send the hosts' sideline into a frenzy.

Wednesday was Susquehanna's second straight defeat to the Red Devils after dropping a 1-2 decision last season in Selinsgrove. Dickinson now leads the all-time series 5-4.

The River Hawks were outshot 18-12; however Susquehanna had two more shots on target, with 9. Kari Schmidt and Sophia Prata led SU with two shots on goal a piece.

Woods' game-winning goal wasn't her only of the game: she also scored in the second quarter to equalize the score at 1 after Ashley Schreffler scored on assist from Prata just under three minutes into the contest for the River Hawks. Woods led all players in Wednesday's contest in shots, recording seven. She also played the most minutes of any substitute, with 44.

Taylor Morrow played in the cage for the Red Devils, recording seven saves. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Derrick protected the cage for the River Hawks, playing the whole game and recording a season-high four saves.

Derrick was relentless in the third quarter, keeping the Red Devils off the scoreboard in a frame where they registered six shots and four corners. Meanwhile, Susquehanna's offense was unable to put a shot across the line.

Four Susquehanna field players stayed on the field for the entire game: Mady Quigley, Schmidt, Lydia Hidlay and Lexi Kresge. Five did the same for Dickinson: Liggio, Jackie Smith, Alexandra Hockwitt, Natalie Slusser and Maggie Carson.

The River Hawks will look to bounce back on Saturday, when they travel to Chestertown, Maryland to take on the Shorewomen of Washington College. Washington is 2-2 on the young season, boasting a win over #16 Shenandoah.
