ELMIRA, NY - Hayden Swinehart scored a free-kick and increased his conference-best assist tally to seven with a pair in a 3-3 tie at Elmira on Tuesday night.
Josh Higgins and
Daniel Hartzell netted their first collegiate goals in the game as well.
The scoring was opened by Higgins in the 19th minute, finishing from close range after an effort from Swinehart was saved, scoring his first goal as a River Hawk from midfield. Higgins' goal adds to his two assists this season.
After
Max Paczewski was fouled in the box, the River Hawks had the opportunity to double their advantage, but Paczewski was denied from the spot by Daniel Gonzalez in the Soaring Eagles' net. Moments later, Elmira got a penalty of their own, which was converted by Mohamed Koroma for the hosts.
After the ball was handled by an Elmira defender from a corner kick, the River Hawks got a second opportunity from twelve yards. However,
Angelo Zografos also had his effort saved by Gonzalez.
Elmira added a second goal a minute from the interval to take a 2-1 lead into half-time.
The River Hawks were not done fighting, however, as Swinehart received a pass from Hartzell, beat two defenders, then had his shot parried back into the path of Hartzell, who found the back of the net from close range. It was Swinehart's seventh assist in six games.
Hardly a minute later, the hosts restored their advantage, going 3-2 up on a goal from Konstantinos Triantafillou. While trailing, the River Hawks were reduced to ten players following a sending-off.
Swinehart got his third goal of the season in style, delivering a free-kick towards
Hayes Webster that the defender smartly opted not to touch, with the ball finding its way through the crowd and into the back of the net.
From there, the game continued to be high-octane and fast paced, but
Tony Burns kept several Elmira shots out of the net on the way to the tie. Burns made nine saves on the night, a career-high. The River Hawks were outshot 19-16 on the night while both goalkeepers saw 12 shots at them, each making the nine saves. The foul battle was 14 committed by Susquehanna to 15 by the Soaring Eagles, while the hosts had one corner to the River Hawks' seven.
The River Hawks move to 4-1-1 on the season ahead of a pair of away matches to come, taking on Immaculata and King's (PA) in the next week. Their next home game sees them open conference play on September 28th, when they take on Wilkes on Senior Day.
