Men's Tennis Opens Season Shutting Out Marywood

SCRANTON, PA – The 2024-25 edition of Susquehanna men's tennis made their debut on Saturday afternoon with a non-conference matchup at Marywood, shutting out the Pacers 7-0.

The familiar faces such as Thomas Hallahan, Gavin Ream, Jack Thon, Owen Miller and Daniel Murphy all made triumphant returns to the court, though Saturday also called for the debuts of Logan Rauschenberger and Tyler Hester. The two paired up at one doubles, defeating Jack Biggs Fred Kloss in shutout fashion, 8-0. Rauschenberger kept this momentum going, shutting out Alex Corcoran at one singles by matching 6-0 scores, while Hester began his singles career 1-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at four singles over Leonardo Guzman.

The effective tandem of Miller and Murphy began the fall at 1-0 after knocking off Alex Corcoran and Leonardo Guzman in two doubles, 8-4. Miller faced Fred Kloss in the three singles spot, knocking him off with 6-0 shutout sets, while Murphy challenged Alex Ni at five singles, 6-1 and 6-0. At three doubles Ream and Thon handed an 8-2 defeat to Matthew Wygonik and Eddie Lennox. Thomas Hallahan shut out his two singles opponent Jack Biggs, 6-0 and 6-0, while first-year Nathan Bassett made his career debut in the six singles spot, helping complete the shutout with a handy 6-1 and 6-0 match win versus Eddie Lennox.

Susquehanna Tennis fans should note that the new ITA NCAA Division III scoring system designates winning the doubles competition as one point, similar to the model that NCAA Division I and II have adopted. The River Hawks have a double feature next weekend, visiting Penn College Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m., then hosting Elizabethtown Sunday in both teams' Landmark Conference opener at 1 p.m.
