BALTIMORE, MD – The Susquehanna women's volleyball team completed their stay Saturday at the Johns Hopkins Greg "Gio" Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament facing off against the three-ranked and host Blue Jays and #19 Ithaca. They opened against the Bombers, posting close sets and were even close taking set two, though Ithaca prevailed 3-0. Johns Hopkins a similar result. The River Hawks come back to Selinsgrove with at least one win under their belt from the challenging weekend, taking a five-setter against unranked Marymount Friday night.
In the morning match against Ithaca, the Bombers took set one, 25-20. In set two Susquehanna had the 19
th-ranked team on the ropes as the maroon and orange held a 20-14 lead. The Bombers, however, staged a rally to get the score close at 21-20. SU managed to get a kill from
Amanda Gore to inch closer at 22-20, but Ithaca ran off five of the next six points to take the set and ultimately a back-and-forth third set 25-21. Susquehanna regrouped for the day's next match against Johns Hopkins. This match proved to be more to JHU's advantage, winning by 25-18, 25-10 and 25-13 scores.
Against Ithaca the River Hawks held a .139 attack percentage on 34 kills with 20 errors. Ithaca, meanwhile, fared .230 with 40 kills and 17 errors. Susquehanna had its best set in the third one with a .296 percentage on 11 kills and three errors, but so did the Bombers, averaging .406 with 17 kills and just three errors.
Ryan Rorls led with eight kills, while Gore and
Emily Kowalski each had six kills. Gore led with four blocks, while Roach had three blocks and a team-best 27 assists.
Regan Kane led with seven digs, while
Jessica Sack had six. Roach, Kane, and
Valerie Stoltz each had a service ace as the team carried three on the day.
Susquehanna posted a .063 attack percentage against John Hopkins with 21 kills and 15 errors, including a best of nine in the opening frame. The Blue Jays managed a .427 attack percentage with 48 kills and only seven errors. Kowalski and Rorls each had six kills to lead the team. Roach delivered 15 assists, while Rorls, Sack and Kane each provided the team's three service aces. Gore had the team's lone block, while adding three kills and one dig. Sack led SU with 11 digs.
The River Hawks have one more test before making their home debut this Saturday as they go west to Carnegie Mellon for a tri-match against CMU, Mount Union, and Ohio Wesleyan. The week after they welcome to Houts Gymnasium Lebanon Valley and Buffalo State for a tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning with SU and Buff State at 11 a.m.
