COLLEGEVILLE, PA – A penalty kick goal was all Susquehanna could offer Wednesday night against an unbeaten Ursinus squad, who delivered the River Hawks a 3-1 defeat to improve their record to 5-0-1. Susquehanna, now 3-3-1, faced a 2-0 first-half deficit when just minutes before the half's conclusion
Liliana Shutt was awarded a penalty kick, who calmly deliverced for her first career goal to cut the deficit in half at intermission. A third Bears goal moments into the second half spelled out the deciding margin.
Ursinus got off to a swift start when barely over one minute in Kaleigh Evans sent the first goal of the contest at the 1:02 mark on River Hawks keeper
Katie Henchy. The first-year goalie finished the night with five saves on eight shots faced. The Bears shot early and often, finding another opportunity in the 18th minute that saw Kayla Harvey put one up for UC from an assist by Adriana Careless. Susquehanna saw the light when Shutt lined up for her penalty kick in the 43rd minute, which she painted beautifully in the top right corner past the diving Mandy Carideo to strike a threat to Ursinus going into halftime.
Susquehanna looked to threaten more, but were afforded just six shots on the evening with three on goal, whereas the Bears totaled 17 shots with nine on goal. Ursinus regained its two-goal lead in the 61st minute when Bella Smouse found the lower left part of the net to put the home team safely ahead. The River Hawks were held from a shot attempt all second half. Henchy's season record moves to 1-3-1 against a tough non-conference schedule to start the season.
It's onward for SU Women's Soccer as they have two more non-conference matches before delving into Landmark play next weekend. This Saturday the River Hawks welcome Delaware Valley for a 4 p.m. kickoff, while next Wednesday, Sept. 25 the team heads to 11th-ranked TCNJ (The College of New Jersey) for a 6 p.m. matchup.
