SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna men's soccer honored their eight seniors in their Landmark Conference opener, beating Wilkes 5-0 aided by a brace from
Clay Yannazzone. They scored all five goals in the first half, bursting out to a commanding lead that they would not relinquish.
The scoring was opened through Yannazzone, after
Tom O'Keefe's long throw was flicked on by
Hayes Webster and headed in from close range by the senior defender. They got their second not long after, when
Hayden Swinehart was fouled in the penalty area and converted the spot-kick to double the River Hawks' cushion.
Two turned to three not long later, when
Max Paczewski won possession at midfield, drove forward into the penalty area, and had a shot saved by the Colonel goalkeeper. The goalkeeper was only able to parry the effort, however, and Paczewski registered an assist as the ball was poked in at the back post by senior
Zach Polovitch.
The fourth goal came courtesy of
Henry McElroy, who scored his first in the orange and maroon when O'Keefe teed him up, the ball coming from the right flank into the penalty area, with McElroy doing well to dispatch the opportunity.
Polovitch received a pass from
Liam Raney at the edge of the penalty area before being brought to ground, earning a second spot-kick of the half that he handed off to Yannazzone, who went for power and blasted the ball into the top left corner of the net to make it 5-0 before the half-time whistle had gone.
In the second half, the River Hawks controlled possession and threatened to add on to their lead, but were unable to do so, but claimed a 5-0 win that sends them to the top of the Landmark Conference on matchday one. At the final whistle, the shot count totaled 17 for Susquehanna and nine for Wilkes. The River Hawks committed 16 fouls while the Colonels had four, but both sides were shown a pair of yellow cards.
Prior to kickoff, the River Hawks celebrated their seniors,
Santiago Andino, Yannazzone,
Holden Miller, Polovitch,
Seth Sidle, O'Keefe,
Ben Sweeney, and Paczewski. With the three goals between the seniors today, the class has produced 40 goals while picking up their 20th win.
The River Hawks return home on Wednesday, taking on Stevenson in their final non-conference game of the season. They improve to 6-1-2 on the campaign and 1-0 in the Landmark, and sit first in the standings.
