Volleyball Sweeps Buff State, LVC in First Homestand of the Season

SELINSGROVE, PA (September 28, 2024) - The Susquehanna women's volleyball team earned a sweep of both Buffalo State and Lebanon Valley College 3-1 each on Saturday afternoon on in their first home matches of the 2024 season.

Starting the day against Buffalo State, the River Hawks dropped a close first set 25-23 but took the next three all by a close margin as well for the win. This included set two and three where Susquehanna trailed 24-21 in both before rallying for five straight points to take both 26-24. A less stressful but still competitive set four ended 25-21 in favor of Susquehanna to seal the win.

In the win the River Hawks posted a .262 attack percentage on 58 kills with only 14 errors compared to Buffalo State's .209 attack percentage with 62 kills and 26 errors. Individually, the big three of Amanda Gore, Emily Kowalski, and Ryan Rorls led the team in kills with 12 each, and Kiera Roach, fresh off eclipsing 2,000 career assists last week, tallied another 42 to lead the team. Roach also led the team in digs with 23, with the next closest on the team being Jessica Sack with 11.

Against Lebanon Valley College later that day, Susquehanna took the first set 25-22 before LVC responded with 25-23 win in set two to make it 1-1. However, the River Hawks won the next two sets by a more comfortable margin of 25-19 and 25-17, respectively to win their second match of the day and complete the sweep.

In this match Susquehanna dominated attack percentage once again with .268 with 47 kills and 14, while LVC had .149 attack percentage with 53 kills and 31 errors. Kowalski led the team in kills with 14, Rorls finished second with 8, and Emma Willow was third with 7. Roach once again led the team in assists with 33 and Sack led the team with 16 digs.

What made the difference for the River Hawks was the difference in errors across both matches. They finished with just 28 total errors compared to their opponents' 57, a +29 differential, which was crucial in close sets all afternoon.

With the sweep Susquehanna improves to 7-7 on the season, and will stay at home for their next matches against Mount Aloysius College and Wilkes University on Friday Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. The next day they take on Moravian University and Arcadia University also at home at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. as part of the Dig Pink Games, with Moravian and Arcadia playing the netural game at 2 p.m.
