Men Complete Turnaround on Haverford, Mark First 2-0 Start Since 2012

HAVERFORD, PA - Seniors Clay Yannazzone and Max Paczewski scored as Susquehanna men's soccer made it two wins from two to open the season. The team turned around a 1-0 deficit to take their second win of the season, scoring in the 75th and 85th minutes after conceding a free-kick goal in the first half.

Susquehanna made four changes from the side that won 4-3 at Misericordia on Friday, August 30, introducing Santiago Andino in goal as well as John Kuderka, Sam Netzley, and Daniel Hartzell, who made his first collegiate start.

The early pressure came from the River Hawks, but it was the Fords who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when Thomas Vanni scored from a free-kick. The River Hawks went into half-time with a 10-7 advantage on shots, including three from Yannazzone and Paczewski, but had nothing to show for it to that point.

In the 75th minute, the River Hawks won a corner that was delivered by first-year Khalil McDonald. It was cleared away, but only found McDonald to cross a second time. That cross found midfielder Josh Higgins, who in turn played the ball across goal that was turned in by Yannazzone for the equalizer. It was his third goal as a River Hawk and his first since he netted in a 4-1 win over Moravian in 2021.

As the game drew closer to its conclusion and tension built up, Hayden Swinehart found space for a through ball to Paczewski, who got on the end of it and sent a cross dangerously into the penalty area. It rebounded off one Haverford defender and then struck the outstretched arm of another, and the referee pointed to the spot. Paczewski stepped up to take it, and saw his effort saved, but he tucked away the rebound to give Susquehanna a late lead with his fourth strike in two games, and his 21st as a River Hawk, which brings him into the top ten in program history.

From there, it was up to Andino and Jim Findlay's defense to close up shop, and they did so without conceding a shot in the final five minutes. Haverford outshot the River Hawks 20-17, but the River Hawks had the edge in shots on target with a 12-6 advantage. Andino made five saves in the contest.

The win makes Susquehanna 2-0 on the season as they look to match their 2023 win total with a clash with Keystone on Saturday, September 7th that represents their home opener.
