SELINSGROVE, PA - From the opening tipoff, Susquehanna won the possession and the game's first score Wednesday night hosting Landmark-foe Lycoming, never surrendering the lead as the River Hawks set about a decisive 74-54 victory. While
Kenzie Selvaggi paced all scorers with 19 points to go with a pair of threes,
Carly George dropped in a double-double with 11 points and a career-best 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.
The team moved swiftly in the early going. As both sides exchanged buckets on their opening possessions that saw the game tied at 4-4, Susquehanna got some leverage with consecutive buckets from
Zoie Maffei and the thrust off a Selvaggi three to lead 11-4.
Lauren Klein added in a layup to make it a 9-0 run, with Lycoming able to hit a 3-pointer from Mya Wetzel to cut it to six. That would be the closest the Warriors would get to the River Hawks the remainder of the night. Susquehanna turned up the heat with a 24-point second quarter, building its lead to as much as that during the period as the Hawks led 43-21 at halftime. Lycoming brought the deficit down to 15 by the end of the third quarter, though the River Hawks were able to build their lead back up to as many as 24 points during the fourth quarter.
Nine River Hawks scored on the night, which also featured Klein adding nine points with one 3-pointer, along with
Grace Meehan drilling a pair of threes in an eight-point night. Maffei also finished with eight points, while ranking second on the team with seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Sydney Weyant also posted up eight points with five assists, while
Julia Pinckert collected six points with five rebounds and
Greta Servitto adding some scoring flare with an and-one near the end of the contest. The River Hawks shot well, making 46.2 percent from the floor (30-65) and a near-perfect night from the free throw line shooting 9-of-10. Susquehanna outrebounded Lycoming, 48-35, including 12 offensive rebounds that led to 11 second-chance points. SU also cashed in 13 Lyco turnovers for 20 points and led 44-24 in points in the paint.
The River Hawks even their record to 7-7 and climb back up above .500 in the Landmark column at 4-3. Having dealt with nationally-ranked conference foes Catholic, Elizabethtown and Scranton in the early going, they settle into their conference season with key games in the middle stretch, beginning at Wilkes on Saturday at 2 p.m. After that they are on the road at Juniata Wednesday, Jan. 22 and back home for Moravian on Saturday, Jan. 25.
