Women Clash Again with Ranked Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Susquehanna women opened strong Wednesday night on the road at #14/19 Catholic, needing to do so in order to keep in-step with the Cardinals and make a serious run. The score after the first quarter proved this with Catholic holding onto just a meager 14-12 lead, though 20 second-quarter points and 22 more in the third helped the Cardinals pull away in a 75-47 victory.

Three River Hawks netted double digits, including Carly George continuing her dominant season with 11 points and six rebounds. Sydney Weyant matched George's points total off the bench with 11, with her and Julia Pinckert each making three 3-pointers as the latter posted ten points on the night with a team-leading six assists. Lauren Klein pulled in a team-best seven rebounds to go with four points, while Kenzie Selvaggi finished with six boards to go with four points.

The River Hawks jumped out to a fast start against the Cardinals as Carly George netted the first basket for the River Hawks. The Cardinals and the River Hawks were knotted up at 12 a piece before the tie was broken by Alexa Kenah with 1:27 left in the first quarter. The River Hawks trailed by two entering the second quarter of the Landmark matchup. Catholic came out swinging in the second quarter outscoring the River Hawks 20-10  in the quarter. Coming into the second half Susquehanna looked to get back to defense and precision shooting to cut into the Cardinals' lead. Though Weyant converted on a 3-pointer and Klein offered up three rebounds in the quarter, the Cardinals continued their shooting prowess, outscoring the River Hawks 22-11 in the third period to give them a 56-33 lead going into the fourth.

Susquehanna's defense prevailed by way of limiting the Cardinals to one of its lowest field goal percentages of the season at 36.9 percent, making 24-of-65 from the floor. They did, however, make 8-of-21 threes to the River Hawks' 6-of-24 and 19-of-23 free throws to SU's 9-of-12. Susquehanna mde 16-of-57 from the field on the evening, while both sides were gridlocked in the rebounding battle at 41-41.

Head coach Gabby Holko's team maintains a two-game lead for fourth place in the Landmark Conference standings at 7-4 in league play and 10-8 overall. The River Hawks also hold the distinction of a perfect slate against unranked Landmark opponents, with first-place Scranton (18-0, 11 Landmark) ranked #2/3 between the respective WBCA and D3hoops.com national poll, second-place Elizabethtown (16-2, 10-1 Landmark) ranked 21st in both rankings, and and third-place Catholic (16-2, 9-2 Landmark) 14th and 19th, respectively. The River Hawks make their way to E-Town this Saturday, hoping to cut into the Blue Jays' action after a narrow 62-53 defeat back on Dec. 7.
