WASHINGTON, D.C. - Susquehanna field hockey clinched a Landmark Tournament spot Wednesday night with a 5-1 rout against the Cardinals of Catholic University. Susquehanna remains with only one conference loss, heading into the final week of the regular season with two games to play. Winning both will clinch a first-round bye for the River Hawks.
How it Happened:
- The River Hawks got out to a hot start in the match, earning a penalty corner less than three minutes into the match.
- Mady Quigley shot a pass across the middle, hitting Kiara Koeller in stride, where Koeller buried the ball to the back of the cage, giving the River Hawks the 1-0 lead early in the game.
- Less than two minutes later, SU gained their second opportunity with yet another penalty corner. Samara Campenni passed the ball off the corner, right to Mady Quigley, whose shot was blocked.
- Koeller found the blocked shot, taking her second shot of the match, and tallying her second goal in less than five minutes.
- The Cardinals escaped the remaining minutes of the first quarter with no further damage being done to the scoreboard.
- With five minutes left to play in the first half, SU received a penalty corner opportunity. Unable to score on the opportunity, the River Hawks fell back into a defensive battle.
- Taylor Rothermel and Samara Campenni broke away with a chance for the River Hawks to put the decisive goal in the cage. Campenni passed a ball over to Rothermel, who buried it behind Catholic's goalkeeper, to push the lead to 3-0 at the break.
- Entering the second half of play, the River Hawks tallied shot after shot, to no avail as the Cardinals defense stood strong through the 15 minute third frame.
- Four minutes into the final quarter of play, Riley Corbett added her name to the scoring rout, knocking the ball to the back of the cage off the passes from Emma Campitelli and Hannah Garlin.
- The Cardinals were able to squeeze one ball past Kylie Schmidt late in the fourth quarter.
- The final goal of the contest belonged to Lauren Leibensperger, scoring mere minutes after the Cardinals.
- Susquehanna held on for the remainder of the match to win the game 5-1, and advance to 6-1 in the Landmark Conference.
