Women's Basketball Falls in Close Battle Against Ranked Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - Women's basketball fought until the end with conference foe, Elizabethtown College, coming up just short in a 59-56 decision. The River Hawks had final possession and had a look at a game-tying 3-pointer, which fell short of the mark as the #14/RV Blue Jays held on to the victory. 

How it Happened:
  • From the opening tip-off, both team began to trade baskets, with neither team being able to jump out to more than a three point lead.
  • Susquehanna continued to fight back from every basket that the Blue Jays made, with the eventual first quarter score being favored towards SU. 
  • SU lead 14-13 after the first frame.
  • The start of the second quarter consisted of more of the same, with both teams trading baskets, keeping the game with in mere points of each other.
  • Zoie Maffei and Carly George earned two clutch baskets to end the first half of play, pushing their team's small lead to eight points. SU led the Blue Jays 31-23 at the break.
  • The Blue Jays came out of the break on a small hot streak, cutting into the SU lead, cutting the score within three points early in the frame.
  • The River Hawks continued to claw their way into the lead, not allowing the Blue Jays to take the lead at all throughout the third quarter. 
  • SU kept a small six point lead heading into the fourth quarter of play, 43-37.
  • The Blue Jays found baskets early in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 43-43 with less than eight minutes to play.
  • The two teams continued to trade baskets, with neither team finding any footing with any kind of lead.
  • The Blue Jays knocked down an important three point shot with less than a minute to play.
  • Trailing by four at 59-55 in the closing seconds, Zoie Maffei went to the line. She made her first and while she missed her second, Julia Roth got the rebound and kicked it to Sydney Weyant, who threw up a three that fell short with SU unable to attempt another three before time expired. 
Inside the Box Score:
  • Multiple River Hawks stepped up to the occasion against a talented E-Town squad, with Julia Roth earning her third double-double of the season. Roth finished the contest with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Zoie Maffei led the River Hawks in scoring, netting 20 points for the River Hawks, while rebounding eight missed shots.
  • Julia Pinckert netted 10 points, earning six rebounds and three assists for the team from Selinsgrove.
Up Next for the River Hawks:
  • Susquehanna currently sits with a 4-1 overall record, as the team heads out to Dallas, Pa to take on the Cougars of Misericordia University on November 25. Susquehanna takes a short holiday break before returning to the road to take on Conference foe, Wilkes University on December 3.
