Women Open with Win over Mary Washington, Will Play Gettysburg Sunday in Tipoff Tournament Championship

SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna women's basketball opened their season and its own tip-off tournament by defeating the Eagles of Mary Washington, 83-60. The River Hawks advance to the championship game and will face off against Gettysburg on Sunday at 3 p.m.

How it Happened:
  • The River Hawks opened the season strong, starting the game on a 13-0 run.
  • Mary Washington used a timeout, turning the momentum ever so slightly in their favor. 
  • Coming out of the timeout, the Eagles added a three to their resume, followed by trading buckets with the River Hawks.
  • SU kept their offense hot, as they exited the first frame leading Mary Washington, 21-8.
  • Entering the second quarter of play, the River Hawks continued with their offensive stride, pushing their lead to as high as 22. 
  • Mary Washington kept cutting into the SU lead, but was unable to cut the lead into single digits. 
  • The Eagles trailed 42-27 at the break.
  • The River Hawks came out of the break hot once more, starting the third quarter on a 6-2 run. 
  • The River Hawks out scored the Eagles throughout the third quarter, 24-11, taking their lead of 28 into the final frame of the afternoon.
  • The fourth quarter was more of the same, with the River Hawks pushing their lead to the biggest of the night at 33. 
  • The Eagles cut into the lead, cutting it down to 20 at one point, before the River Hawks iced the game and won 83-60.
  • The River Hawks advanced to the Championship game to play Gettysburg on Sunday afternoon.
Inside the Box Score:
  • The River Hawks out shot the Eagles in every quarter besides the fourth, where the Eagles scored 22 compared to the River Hawks 17. 
  • Julia Roth, in her first game since her season-ending injury last year, led the River Hawks in points with 25.
  • Pinckert, Weyant, and Greek all entered double digits in points during the contest.
  • Roth was the only athlete to have a double-double during the contest.
  • The River Hawks pulled down 49 rebounds and assisted with 22 baskets throughout the contest.
  • SU shot 45.8% from the field during the contest.
