MADISON, NJ - Susquehanna baseball dropped the final game of their opening Landmark Conference series at Drew, losing Sunday's game 9-5 but winning the series after sweeping Saturday's doubleheader.
The River Hawks scored the first run with two out in the first, after
Tony Rossi singled up the middle and came around to score on a wild pitch after stealing third.
Drew put up four runs between the second and the third inning, with RBI doubles in both innings for the Rangers.
Ben Gearhart started for Susquehanna, and was stuck with the losing decision after allowing those four runs in 2.2 innings. Southpaw
Max Lipton worked another 3.2 innings, striking out three and allowing two runs, one of which was earned, with one crossing for the Rangers in the fifth and seventh.
CJ Orrego scored the River Hawks' second run, reaching on an error and scoring on an RBI groundout by
Tyler Hmielewski in the sixth inning, before the visitors scored two runs to make it 5-4 Drew in the seventh when
Jaden Buechler singled, Rossi was intentionally walked after Buechler stole second, and both scored, with Buechler crossing on
Michael Gagliardi's RBI single and Rossi scoring when
Sam Martucci reached on an error by Drew's shortstop. The River Hawks threatened to change the game in the top of the seventh, but left the bases loaded.
Drew added three vital insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 9-4 after scoring again in the seventh, and Susquehanna was unable to pull off a comeback despite scoring in the ninth through Martucci's double and Hmielewski reaching on an error to score him.
Susquehanna drop to 9-6 and 2-1 in the Landmark after the loss, but take a series win from the weekend as they look to establish themselves as a title contender. They take on Keystone on Thursday, March 20, before starting a three-game home set against Lycoming two days later.
