SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna baseball began its slate of home games for the 2025 season by beating Lycoming twice in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday, winning the second game by way of run-rule.
Game 1: Susquehanna 9, Lycoming 5
The River Hawks scored nine runs in the first five innings, getting two three-run frames en route to their first home win of the season. They started with two in the bottom of the first, with
Jack Cahill knocking an RBI single that scored
Tony Rossi and
Michael Gagliardi.
Three more runs would follow in the second, giving the River Hawks a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish, with Gagliardi scoring
Lucas Zachesky on an RBI groundout and
Sam Martucci blasting a double off the wall in right center to score
Jaden Buechler and Rossi.
In the fourth, Gagliardi again recorded an RBI groundout to score
Dylan Heyduk, and in the fifth, Zachesky brought home Cahill with an RBI single, Buechler plated
Tyler Hmielewski with a sacrifice fly, and Heyduk singled to score Zachesky.
Evan Applegate and
Zach Plank pitched for the River Hawks, with Applegate striking out three over 4.2 innings of work and Plank working the remaining 4.1 innings, allowing just one run. Six River Hawks recorded a hit in the opener of the three-game set.
Game 2: Susquehanna 12, Lycoming 2 (7 innings)
Jack Greco tossed seven strong innings while fanning seven Warriors while he was backed by an eight spot in the second inning where all nine batters reached base consecutively.
The first inning also saw the River Hawks experience success, with three runs crossing in the inning. Heyduk walked, advanced on a passed ball, and scored when Rossi reached on an error.
CJ Orrego plated Rossi with a single after a walk by Gagliardi, who scored on a well-executed double steal.
In the second inning, the hosts blew the game wide open, with a rally starting when Buechler and Heyduk were hit by pitches. Rossi, Gagliardi, and Martucci singled, Orrego and Cahill were plunked, Hmielewski walked, and Zachesky completed the rally with a two-run single.
Greco worked his way through the Lycoming lineup with ease, allowing just six hits and two earned runs to take home a quality start and a complete game to move to 4-1 on the season with the win. The River Hawks completed the run-rule victory with an RBI hit by Rossi in the bottom half of the second that saw the game come to a close after seven innings.
With the pair of wins, the River Hawks improve to 11-6 on the season, and 4-1 in the Landmark Conference, while they will look to complete the sweep of the Warriors on Sunday, March 23rd.
