Softball Splits with Lycoming to Open Landmark Season

WILLIAMSPORT, PA- Susquehanna softball began their Landmark Conference schedule at Lycoming College Saturday where they defeated the Warriors of Lycoming College in the first slate of the double header 4-0. The River Hawks were defeated in the second game of the afternoon 4-3.

Game 1: Susquehanna 4, Lycoming 0

The River Hawks and Warriors saw a tie matchup in the first game of the opening slate of conference games for each team. Both teams' defense held strong, as the matchup stayed scoreless until the 7th inning when Lexi Palumbo doubled, scoring Hannah Roland. Palumbo sparked an offensive surge as SU ripped off four straight runs, to win the game 4-0. Stevie Shaak singled a ball to second base, earning an RBI as Palumbo touched the home bag. Junior pitcher Brianna Jones singled into centerfield, Emily Deitch to second base, while pushing the game deciding run across the bag. Shaak and Madison Apostolakos both earned a run.

Brianna Jones got the start, pitching all seven innings and allowing only two hits. Jones earns her third shutout this season, as well as advancing her win-loss on the season to 3-2.

Game 2: Lycoming 4, Susquehanna 3

The River Hawks fell to the Warriors in the second game of the afternoon in Williamsport. Lycoming ripped off four runs in the first inning, which would be to much for SU to overcome. Susquehanna earned one run in the first inning, with Hannah Roland grounding out, and Brianna Jones making a break for the plate. The second inning Susquehanna tacked on an additional run to cut the Lycoming lead in half. Jones doubled to center field, advancing Julia LaRose across home plate. Alyssa Mayor scored on a muffed throw in the frame.

Hannah Foust earned the start pitching one inning before being replaced by Ashley Carlson. The duo paired up for two strikeouts and allowed six hits on the afternoon.

Up Next For SU:

Susquehanna returns to Selinsgrove for their home-opener against York College of Pa. In a doubleheader matchup with the Spartans. The River Hawks sit at 4-10 heading into the non-conference mid-week matchup. Following the doubleheader against York, the River Hawks head back on the road to take on conference foe, The University of Scranton on March 29 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader.
