Seniors Join in on Scoring Frenzy to Beat Wilkes

SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna University men's lacrosse delivered another high-scoring win on Saturday with a season-high 24 goals to defeat Wilkes 24-10. The excitement was palpable all afternoon as the team celebrated their 15 seniors prior to game in honor of senior day. Many of the upperclassmen reciprocated as the team poured on 18 first-half goals. Chris Ciccarello and Jack Gaillard led the charge with eight points, with Ciccarello netting five goals and Gaillard an even split with four goals and four assists, further sending their career numbers up the ladder.

Senior Kieran Thomas began the scoring as the team picked up an early 1-0 lead just 32 seconds in, though the Colonels returned fire as Stone Sosnovik tied things up one minute later. That was all that Wilkes could offer up though as the River Hawks began their onslaught of goals with 11 straight, including nine to close out the period. Ciccarello scored all five of his goals in this stretch, while Gaillard offered two goals and three assists. Connor Aitken, Lucas Biddiscombe, Jack White, and Pat McDermott had the remaining goals to make it a 12-1 game early in the second quarter. Wilkes got back in the scoring action with three in the second quarter, though Susquehanna doubled this effort as Gaillard added on two more, along with another score from McDermott and one each from Reese Ackerman, Jimmy Maro, and senior Ben Polich for an 18-4 lead at the break.

Susquehanna finished with six more goals in the second half, courtesy of Charlie Haines, Drew Filipovits, senior Steven Musser, Biddiscombe, senior Matthew Faggioli, and Garrett Howell. The River Hawks' own goal was defended by six people on the day as senior Augie Granatelli got the start and the win, picking up two saves in 24 minutes and change of work. From there it was Jack Storipan, Will Harcourt, Ian Murphy, Matt Connor, and fellow graduating player TJ Lynch. All six combined for five saves as Susquehanna held a whopping 75-25 lead in shots and 49-15 in shots on goal. The River Hawks also dominated the midfield battle, winning 29 faceoffs to Wilkes' nine. Senior Alexander Messina won 15 of his 20 battles, while Brandon Cash won 6-of-7 and Sergio Cohen-Chironos 8-of-11.

Gaillard added two more unprecedented feats in Susquehanna annals as his 91 points this season marks the first time an SU player reached 90 in one campaign, while sending his career numbers up to 252 career points, marking the first person ever to go above 250 points lifetime. Ciccarello also became the second player ever to reach 50 goals in one season, joining his teammate Lorence, who posted 62 goals and 57 goals in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Though Lorence did not get on the board Saturday, his 187 career goals puts him three away from the Landmark record of 190 set by Goucher's Rory Averett (2009-12).

Saturday's win puts Susquehanna back over .500 in its Landmark Conference season at 4-3 and 11-4 overall with two games to go. To ensure a Landmark Tournament spot the team will need to put on great performances to wrap up the year, starting at Goucher on Wednesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. and at Elizabethtown on Saturday, April 26 at 12 p.m. As it stands the River Hawks are currently in fifth place, with their three conference defeats coming at the hands of Catholic, Scranton and Moravian, all above Susquehanna in the standings. Elizabethtown is in second place at 6-1 in the Landmark, while Goucher is seventh with a 2-4 league mark.
