SELINSGROVE, PA - Before severe weather halted Wednesday's Susquehanna softball doubleheader at home against Stevenson, the Mustangs took game one by a 9-1 score after five innings. The River Hawks scored the first run of the second game in the first inning, which Stevenson answered with a five spot in the top of the second. Play was halted in the home half of the second with one out when a late-afternoon storm showered Sassafras Field. Details on a possible continuation of the game will be made available once confirmed.
Game 1: Stevenson 9, Susquehanna 1
The first pitch was thrown on a cloudy, cold day by Ashley Carlson. The SU athlete saw three batters step up to the plate, retiring all three with the help of her defense. Stevenson retired the bottom half of the first inning in similar fashion. The second inning saw both teams' defense hold strong, as both teams were unable to earn a hit or a run. The third inning was all the Mustangs. The visiting team scored seven runs in the frame, taking a commanding 7-0 lead. Susquehanna cut into the lead when Bri Jones flied out to left field, pushing Emily Deitch across the plate. Susquehanna trailed 7-1 after the third frame. Stevenson tacked on insurance runs in the fourth and fifth inning, clinching the game in five frames.
Carlson started the first two innings before being relieved by Hannah Foust. Carlson earned one strikeout on the afternoon, only allowing two hits. Foust allowed four runs, striking out two batters.
