Women Dominate E-Town on Senior Day to Cruise into Landmark Tournament

SELINSGROVE, PA - A bevy of lights-out performances, including an eight-point day from Liv Owen, a season-high six goals by Abby Andrus, and 14 saves from goalie Aerin O'Brien, led to Susquehanna women's lacrosse opening up an early 6-0 lead on Elizabethtown Saturday after one quarter and eventually a 14-7 Landmark victory. The River Hawks handily took the regular-season finale and the battle for the Landmark Tournament's fifth seed against the Blue Jays, with both teams entering the fray with a 4-4 league record. Susquehanna improved to 5-4 in the Landmark and 8-9 overall, and will travel to Moravian in the Landmark opening round game on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Susquehanna's five seniors were recognized prior to the game in Owen, Emma Kelleher, Chloe Pappalardo, Nicolette Genovese, and Allie Kutler. Each played a key role in the victory that saw the team dominate the draw controls, making clears, and efficient ball possession.

If there was an instance of Susquehanna getting a hold of the game, it was the draw controls where the River Hawks won six of the first seven in the first quarter. These helped usher in the game's first six goals, with Owen scoring the first three to earn her hat trick with just 5:39 melted off the clock. Before the Blue Jays could worry about containing Owen, they had another challenger in Abby Andrus, who scored the next two goals towards her six-goal day. The period finished out with senior Kutler scoring off a feed from Andrus, giving the latter her 100th career point. Elizabethtown threatened with two goals to cut the lead down to four, only for Andrus and the seniors Kelleher and Genovese to rally with one goal apiece. Andrus connected for career point 101 from a Kelleher assist, with Kelleher notching her first goal of the day from an Owen pass and then Genovese getting on the board to make the score 9-2. An E-Town goal ensued, followed by over seven minutes of scoreless action as the halftime score read 9-3. This was in part to O'Brien garnering seven of her 14 saves in the opening period as she turned away all five of the Blue Jays' five free possession shots on the afternoon.

E-Town opened with a goal to start the third quarter, only for Susquehanna to reel off four straight for a game-high nine-goal lead. Andrus had two more goals in the stretch, along with Kutler and Genovese each getting on the board again. Andrus finished off with one more score from an Owen assist. Susquehanna prevailaed on one of three free position shots, with Genovese getting her opportunity to the back of the net. The River Hawks pulled through on 16-of-19 clear attempts to E-Town's 13-of-16 and caused 12 of the Blue Jays' 22 turnovers, with the seniors Kutler and Cole each having two on the day. O'Brien and Rachel Baratucci also had two CT's.

Owen, who already is the program's career assists leader, had three goals and five assists to bring her season total to a career-high 40 assists, becoming just the third person in program history to reach at least 40 assists in one year. Her numbers have now risen to 124 assists, 107 goals, and 231 points. Andrus now had 93 career points and 11 assists for 104 points. O'Brien nears the 400 career-saves plateau after reaching 300 earlier this season, now with 398.

The River Hawks make their third straight entry to the Landmark Tournament and will meet with Moravian for the second straight year in the first round. The Greyhounds defeated Susquehanna earlier this year 14-6, though the River Hawks hope to have the same success as last year when they beat Moravian in the tournament to avenge a regular-season loss to the Greyhounds.
