BETHLEHEM, PA - Women's lacrosse's
Allie Kutler's career-high five goals Tuesday night at Moravian proved to be the difference as Susquehanna pulled off a 13-8 upset of Moravian in the opening round of the Landmark Conference Tournament. The River Hawks, seeded fifth, defeated the fourth-seeded Greyhounds to exact revenge on a team that defeated them 14-6 back on Mar. 29 to punch their ticket to the conference semifinals for the second straight year. They'll head to top-seeded Scranton on Thursday in a 4 p.m. matchup.
Kutler and fellow top goal contributor
Abby Andrus helped get Susquehanna off to a 4-0 lead, splitting the share of the goals as they hung a 4-1 score up on the board after the first period. Both Andrus' goals, the first and fourth of this stretch, came on extra-person opportunities, while Kutler's second goal, the third of this sequence, happened on a free position chance. Any easy win was thwarted as Moravian battled back with four straight to start the second and take a 5-4 lead. The River Hawks found their groove again thanks to
Emma Kelleher executing a free-position shot on another extra-person opportunity to tie the game at five, then
Sloane Coddington getting in on the scoring action to regain the lead with 4:31 to go in the first half on an assist by
Liv Owen.
Owen, Susquehanna's career assists leader, added five to her total Tuesday to give her a career-high 45 assists on the season. She even added a goal to her credit to close out a lucrative third quarter for the River Hawks that saw them rebuild their lead to four at 12-8. They scored the first three goals of the second half thanks to
Jessica Russo's goal, then Kutler offering Susquehanna's next three goals, including one while at a one-person disadvantage on a free position, to lead 10-7. While Moravian scored to cut the lead to two shortly thereafter,
Nicolette Genovese registered a key goal, assisted by Owen, before the latter put on the final touch before the quarter ended. Only one goal was accounted for in the final period, courtesy of Kelleher, as Susquehanna's vital defense closed out the win. Goalie
Aerin O'Brien tallied 18 saves on the day, including one free position save during the fourth quarter, as she celebrated crossing the 400 career save plateau, now with 416. She reached 300 career goals earlier this spring.Â
Kutler now sits with 97 career goals, while her one assist Tuesday to feed Owen on an extra-person opportunity to wrap the first quarter puts her at 31 career assists and 128 points lifetime. She even had seven of the team's 11 draw controls, putting her over 300 career draw controls with 305. Owen's career numbers accumulate to 129 assists and 108 goals for 237 points. Kelleher's two goals and one assist Tuesday gives her 81 goals and 48 assists for 129 career points, while earning three draw controls to up her lifetime total to 145.Â
The River Hawks head to Scranton on Thursday, a team that beat them 18-7 just last Wednesday. The Royals completed their Landmark season unbeaten at 9-0 to earn the top seed and are 12-5 overall. The memories of last season's matchup still linger as the River Hawks celebrated a 9-8 overtime victory over Scranton on home soil as Susquehanna looks to continue their revenge tour up in the Electric City.Â
