Softball's Fifth-Inning Rally Fuels Win over Wilkes on Senior Day

SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna softball had their senior day Sunday against Wilkes in a key Landmark Conference series. The River Hawks honored their six seniors in a pregame ceremony, then got right to work to keep up their late-season push. While the Colonels marched their way to a 6-3 win in the opener and opened game two with a 4-0 lead, the River Hawks' bats heated up with a five-run fifth to take the lead. Relief pitcher Amanda Amerman seized this opportunity with the go-ahead RBI single, while another run came through one inning later to take a 6-4 victory.

Prior to the game the team recognized seniors Lexi Palumbo, Emily Deitch, Hannah Roland, Ashleigh Gerber, Olivia Murray, and Hailey Kaba. All were in the first game's starting lineup and combined for five of the team's nine hits.

Game 1: Wilkes 6, Susquehanna 3
Wilkes jumped to an early 1-0 lead after the first inning, before shutting out Susquehanna until the third frame. Brianna Jones singled down the left field line, scoring Olivia Murray. The River Hawks played a tied game until the fourth inning when Wilkes exploded for four runs, pushing their lead out of reach for the River Hawks. Mya Morales sent a sac fly to right field, scoring Graysen Trybulski in the bottom half of sixth inning, cutting the  Colonels lead to three. Wilkes kept the pressure on scoring an insurance run in the top half of the seventh inning. Susquehanna did not go away quietly as Lexi Palumbo delivered a solo home run to right center field, the sixth of her career and first this season. It would be the last run of the game.

Pitcher Jones struck out six in her seven-inning outing, which represented just her fourth loss of the season at 9-4. Wilkes earned eight hits off the junior, with only two runs being earned.

Game 2: Susquehanna 6, Wilkes 4
A come-from-behind effort put Susquehanna above Wilkes in game two of Sunday's afternoon action. A 1-2-3 first inning for SU gave the team the momentum they needed to come from behind to win the game. Wilkes kept the game tied at zero until the fourth inning when they opened the scoring, dropping two runs off of two hits in the fourth. Wilkes pushed the lead to four in fifth inning, before an explosive five run fifth for the River Hawks reclaimed the lead for the home team. Alyssa Mayorca singled down the right field line, scoring Brie Jones for SU's first run of the afternoon.

Emily Deitch singled to right center, pushing Palumbo and Mayorca across the plate to take two more runs away from the Wilkes lead. Hailey Kaba singled down the right field line, scoring Melinda Schwartz, followed by Amanda Amerman singling, advancing Mya Morales across the plate to take the lead. The sixth inning saw the River Hawks put up the final insurance run when Katelyn Dugery singled to center field, pushing Palumbo across for the final run of the afternoon. Susquehanna held on to win 6-4.

Up Next For SU:
The River Hawks' scheduled non-conference series at Penn State Altoona Monday has been canceled. Susquehanna sits in third place with a 9-5 Landmark record and 13-18 overall mark, with just one more conference series to be had this Saturday at home against Drew. First pitch is set to be thrown at 1 p.m.
