WASHINGTON, DC - The Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team completed a three-game road trip Wednesday evening at Catholic, rematching against a Cardinals team that bounced them from the Landmark Tournament last season in the semifinals on its way to a NCAA Tournament appearance. Catholic won this year's matchup by a 16-4 score for its 17th straight victory over Susquehanna dating back to 2014.
The Cardinals opened the fray with four goals as they held a 4-0 lead after one. Susquehanna's only retort in the first half was
Nicolette Genovese opening the second quarter with a goal, her fifth of the season, off a feed from
Emma Kelleher. Catholic responded with five straight goals to finish out the half leading 9-1, then parlayed that with three more unanswered in the third for a 12-1 lead going into the fourth. With a running clock in the fourth quarter, the River Hawks scored three goals to finish the game on a positive note. Two of these belonged to
Sophia Trively, with her first coming on a free position, to raise her season total to eight goals on the season, with the other coming from
Makaela Larkin for the fourth score of her career.
Liv Owen assisted the team's last goal scored by Trively, pumping her school-record career numbers to 103 assists.
Goalie
Aerin O'Brien delivered another 60-minute outing in goal, posting up eight saves to boost her career numbers to 344 in that department. The shot charts read a 38-9 lead for Catholic, including 24-9 in shots on goal. Susquehanna cleared on 7-of-18 tries compared to Catholic's 11-of-13. The Cardinals held a modest 14-9 lead on draw controls, with
Allie Kutler leading Susquehanna's efforts with five draw controls.
Sloane Coddington added two more, with another coming from
Emma Kelleher. Susquehanna converted on its lone free position chance in the fourth thanks to Trively, while Catholic managed 3-for-7 on free positions.
The River Hawks, now 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the Landmark, hope a return to their native Sassafras Field will offer a spark to stake a claim for the Landmark Tournament. They host two straight home games, starting with Lycoming Saturday, April 5 at 12 p.m., followed by Juniata on Wednesday, April 9 at 4 p.m. Looking ahead Susquehanna travels to Wilkes on Saturday, April 12, followed by a midweek home matchup with Goucher Wednesday, April 16.
