SELINSGROVE, PA - Saturday proved to be a fruitful day for the Susquehanna women's lacrosse team, evening their Landmark Conference record to 2-2 following an 18-12 win over Lycoming. The River Hawks earned their seventh straight victory over the Warriors through a trio of players scoring at least three goals.
Emma Kelleher led in this category with four goals, while adding one assist for five points. Sophomore
Sophia Trively tallied a career-high three goals. Perhaps the biggest highlight was senior
Liv Owen, who etched another slab to her historic career with a game-high eight points in three goals and five assists, making her the fifth person in school history to achieve 200 career points. She now has 202 lifetime off 94 goals and a school-record 108 assists.
Despite the impressive final tally Susquehanna played behind to start after Lycoming scored first just a minute and a half in on Riley Block's goal from Alexa Baldwin. Momentum, though, belonged to the River Hawks as they scored three straight to claim the lead and not look back. It began with Trively scoring from a pass from Kelleher, followed by Owen getting on the board with a goal from
Sloane Coddington, then Kelleher getting her first goal of the day unassisted. The pattern continued as the Warriors responded with a score, only to fall further behind as SU scored three straight again from
Jessica Russo, Kelleher, and
Waverly Oake-Libow. The score read 5-2 Susquehanna after the first-quarter, which gave way to the highest-scoring quarter of the day with nine goals in the second quarter. The River Hawks netted five in this frame to the Warriors' four, with the aforementioned Oake-Libow score opening the period that was followed by goals from
Allie Kutler,
Abby Andrus, Owen, and Trively.
Ahead 10-6 at the half, Susquehanna got going in the second half as Kelleher offered her third score of the day from Kutler to take an 11-7 lead. Then came the historic moment for Owen. Sitting at 199 career points, Owen reached the bicentennial mark with an unassisted goal to put her team's lead up to five, which was followed further by another goal from Oake-Libow from
Makaela Larkin and Andrus scoring from an Oake-Libow feed, both coming on one-up opportunities. After two Lyco goals wrapped up the third to cut SU's lead to 14-9, the River Hawks put any doubt to rest with four consecutive goals to start the fourth. Kelleher, Trively, and Russo all came back around to add another score, while
Nicolette Genovese got on the board on a one-down situation.
Another key note today was Kutler registering three assists in a four-point day, considering she entered the contest Saturday without an assist so far this season. Just as impressive was Kutler facing off in the circle and collecting 12 of the team's 22 draw controls for 267 in her career, single-handedly totaling Lyco's team total all afternnon. Kelleher registered nine draw controls to give her 125 for her career. Coddington had the one remaining draw control for Susquehanna. One of Trively's goals came on a free position shot as the River Hawks finished 1-of-4 on free positions, while the Warriors made 3-of-6. Susquehanna also caused 13 of Lyco's 16 total turnovers. Goalie
Aerin O'Brien had nine saves in another full 60 minutes in goal, including one on a free position.
After stiff Landmark competition to start their conference slate, Susquehanna looks to settle in to its Landmark season with a home matchup against Lycoming on Wednesday at 5 p.m., followed by a visit to Wilkes next Saturday, April 12 and home against Goucher Wednesday, April 16.
