SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna women's basketball held a nine-point lead on Catholic entering the fourth quarter of a Landmark Conference home game Wednesday night. The Cardinals, however, countered with 24 fourth-quarter points and held on in a tight battle until the end to escape Selinsgrove with a 66-62 victory.
How it Happened:
- Carly George opened the game with a layup from Julia Pinckert, putting the River Hawks on the board 2-0.
- Both teams traded baskets early in the game, before Catholic pushed a slight 15-7 lead with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter of play.
- The River Hawks fought back, cutting the Catholic lead to one, ending the first quarter of play trailing 17-16.
- The team's continued to trade baskets in the second quarter, with the Cardinals clinging on to a small three point lead.
- The River Hawks finished the quarter going on a 8-0 run, beginning with a Sydney Weyant three pointer to knot the game at 26 all.
- Julia Roth netted the final bucket of the half, pushing the SU lead to five, where the River Hawks would take a 31-26 lead into the break.
- Sydney Weyant came out of the halftime break hot, scoring the first three point basket of the second half, pushing the SU lead to eight points.
- The River Hawks continued to press their lead, pushing it to as high as 11 points late in the third quarter up 49-38 and ending the frame leading 51-42.
- Catholic stormed back to start the fourth quarter, scoring the first six points of the period in less than one minute. This trend continued as the Cardinals logged 24 fourth-quarter points to Susquehanna's 11.
- The River Hawks held firm, leading up until the last two minutes. They led 58-57 before Catholic went ahead on an Anna Scoblick layup, then tacked on seven free throws to close the game on a 9-4 run. Susquehanna's last four points were all from Julia Roth, one layup and two free throws.
Inside the Box Score:
- Julia Roth led all River Hawks scorers in points, finishing the afternoon with 16 points, while pulling down 16 of the team's 44 rebounds. This marks Roth's eighth double-double of the season.
- Calrly George netted double-digit points for the River Hawks with 12, as well as Delany Chilcote finishing the afternoon with 11 points.
- Julia Pinckert moved closer to the 500 career rebound mark with four boards Wednesday night, now with 493 for her career.
- Susquehanna shot 36.2% from the field (17-of-47), while also shooting 21-of-32 from the free throw line and 7-of-20 from beyond the arc. Catholic shot 38.1 (24-of-63), making 5-of-28 threes and 13-of-24 free throws. CUA made 7-of-15 field goals with one 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to SU's 3-of-10.
- The River Hawks outrebounded the Cardinals 44-36, though Catholic managed a 14-12 lead on offensive rebounds. Turnovers were also a factor in the game with Susquehanna 26 and Catholic 18.
