SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna's
Abby Andrus struck first Wednesday in the women's lacrosse team's home opener against Dickinson, putting the River Hawks out in front early 1-0, while reaching the century mark in career goals. She finished with two on the day, though it would be half of Susquehanna's scoring output on the day as the Red Devils took a 7-4 win.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- After scoring two goals in the season opener at Shenandoah, Andrus picked up where she left off as she flinged in the game's first score off an assist from Abigail Holland to lead 1-0 with 12:31 left in the first.
- A few minutes passed by before Dickinson tied the game as Abby Geary netted the first of her two scores on the day to tie it up at 1-1.
- Andrus responded almost immediately with her second goal on the day, this time coming from Abby DiComes to take a 2-1 lead to end the first quarter.
- A series of cards were drawn to each side, with both teams vying for a scoring chance while one player up. Ironically, the game's next goal came when the Red Devils scored on a player-down chance during a yellow card. This go-ahead score came from Lexi Thaut to tie it up at 2-2 with 8:17 left in the half.
- This began the first of four straight goals from Dickinson over the next three quarters. A Heidi Schmidt goal in the second quarter gave them a 3-2 halftime lead, then Crawford Fisher offered the lone goal of the third period to go up 4-2 after three. Bella Guckes finished out this run with an early fourth quarter goal for a 5-2 lead.
- The River Hawks rallied to bring the game back to a one-goal difference thanks to Sophia Trively scoring, followed up by Maggie McDermott off an Abby DiComes assist to make it 5-4 with 6:59 remaining.
- Any hopes of a comeback were thwarted as less than a minute later Sage Whiteside scored for Dickinson on a Guckes assist. Then less than a minute and a half later Geary struck again to make it 7-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Dickinson led 25-13 in shots and 15-4 in shots on goal. Susquehanna goalie Aerin O'Brien had a busy day in net, coming up with 10 impressive saves. Her counterpart, Peyton Vandorpe, registered two saves to go to 2-0 on the year.
- Both goalies and their defense did well on free positions, with Dickinson only able to come through on 1-of-4 free position chances, while Susquehanna was shut out, 0-for-4, on theirs.
- The Red Devils had ten draw controls to the River Hawks' three. Kimberly Nagengast had two draw controls, while Alena Malinowski had the one remaining for Susquehanna.
- Andrus' two goals led the team, while DiComes led with two assists as each had two points. Andrus now has 101 career goals and counting.
