WILKES-BARRE, PA - Susquehanna University's men's lacrosse team ventured up to Wilkes University for.a midweek Landmark contest, breaking an early 2-2 tie with seven straight goals to ignite them to a 17-8 win.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- The River Hawks scored the first two goals off the sticks of Matt Chubenko and Owen Teaney. Chubenko finished with two goals on the day, while Teaney led the scoring with three goals on the afternoon.
- After the Colonels responded with two of their own to tie it up at two all, Susquehanna responded with a resilient seven-goal run that spanned the first, second, and third quarters. Starting goalie Ian Murphy and Jack Storipan each held their own during this stretch as Murphy played much of the first half before Storipan took over just before haltime.
- This seven-goal scoring run was aided by Teaney and Chubenko adding another goal to their tally sheets, while Drew Filipovits scored both his goals on the day during this run. The remaining three scores were carried out by Pat McDermott, Jimmy Maro and Reese Ackerman.
- Wilkes ended its drought halfway through the third quarter as Lucas Ortenberg scored to cut the lead to 9-3. It would be short-lived, however, as the River Hawks retaliated with another scoring run, plugging away for five consecutive goals.
- This five-goal stretch in the third quarter came from five different players: Brandon Cash, Gabe Broome, McDermott, Teaney and Wallace Pickard IV.
- While the Colonels answered with a goal near the end of the third quarter and scoring four more in the fourth, Susquehanna finished out the day with three goals in the fourth, two from Landon Lane and the last from Colin Bostrom.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- McDermott led the team with five points on two goals and three assists. Chubenko, Bostrom and Teaney each had three points, with Teaney netting three goals, Chubenko two goals and one assist, and Bostrom one goal and two assists.
- Murphy picked up the win as the starting goalie, delivering six saves and allowing two goals, while Storipan came up with eight saves.
- SU led in shots, 48-42, and 33-22 in shots on goal.
- The River Hawks took advantage of one of their five extra-man opportunities, while the defense held off the Colonels during their three man-up chances.
- Susquehanna won the faceoff battle 18-9 as Cash won 13 and Brendan Gleason five.
