SELINSGROVE, PA - The Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team noticed a slight 5-2 halftime advantage against Lycoming Saturday and made the right adjustments to fire off ten second-half goals to pull away with a 15-4 win. Team assists leader
Pat McDermott lived up to his moniker with six on the day as well as one goal, while first-year
Matt Chubenko netted a game-high four goals as the River Hawks earned their second straight win to improve to 2-1 in the Landmark.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- Susquehanna looked to be in control at the start as McDermott got his big-assist day started by setting up Quin Michaels for the game-opening goal.
- McDermott then fed Drew Filipovits to give Susquehanna 2-0 lead with 5:22 left in the first.
- Lycoming kept the game close as just over one minute later they took advantage of some transition miscues by the River Hawks when Cesar Carmona-Felipe scored to make it 2-1.
- The River Hawks were not interested in a tied ballgame as they scored the first two goals of the second quarter, courtesy of Kieran Koenke from Jimmy Maro and then Nick Remund from McDermott.
- The Warriors' Samuel Hall answered to bring it back to a two-goal game at 4-2.
- With less than a minute remaining in the half, Susquehanna got a lift when a penalty was called on the Warriors. They wasted no time with the extra-man opportunity as Owen Teaney scored off an assist from McDermott to make it a 5-2 halftime lead.
- The River Hawks got rolling to start the second half, outscoring the Warriors 5-0 in the third quarter.
- First-year Greyson Stewart got the start in goal for Susquehanna, earning two saves before Jack Storipan took over just before the end of the first half. He had three saves, all coming in the third quarter.
- Susquehanna used the third quarter to build to its lead, with three goals coming from Chubenko and one each from Koenke and McDermott.
- Maro scored the first goal of the fourth quarter off McDermott as he wrapped up his six-assist afternoon.
- Chubenko then added his fourth goal of the day, then Brendan Allen got in on the action with a goal to make it 13-2. Both goals were assisted by Colin Bostrom.
- After two straight Lyco goals, Susquehanan returned the favor with one each from Landon Lane and Remund's second goal of the day.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- McDermott's seven-point day gives him a team-best 37 points on 15 goals and 22 assists.
- The rookie Chubenko became the first River Hawk this season to amass 20 goals this season, now with 22 on the year. He also has four assists this season for 26 points.
- Susquehanna outshot Lycoming 44-19 and 26-9 in shots on goal. They were stacked up against a resilient Warriors goalkeeper in Evan Donnelly, who tallied 11 saves Saturday.
- The River Hawks were successful on 2-of-5 extra man opportunities, while the Warriors were 1-of-2.
- The orange and maroon won 18-of-23 faceoffs, carried out by Brandon Cash winning 12 and Brendan Gleason winning six.
UP NEXT FOR THE RIVER HAWKS
- Susquehanna takes its two-game win streak on the road next Friday as they travel to Moravian for a 4 p.m. matchup.
- It is then two straight home Landmark contests, beginning Wednesday, April 8 against Juniata and then Saturday, April 11 versus Drew.
