SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna softball opened their home season Wednesday with an afternoon non-conference doubleheader against Misericorida. The Cougars posted a pair of sizable wins, using a ten-run first inning to take the opener in five innings 12-3, then posting a 10-1 six-inning win in the nightcap.
MISERICORDIA 12, SUSQUEHANNA 3
- With Riley Mullen starting for the River Hawks in game one, the Cougars were hitting it right where the River Hawks weren't with eight hits during the ten-run innning. Misericorida had 14 at-bats in the frame as Mackenzie Fizer had an inning with four RBIs spread out over two singles. Her first brought in the first run of the day, while her second was a single to right field, which got by Graysen Trybulski all the way to the warning track to bring Fizer around the bases for three ribbies.
- The score showed 4-0 Misericordia when pitcher Piper Wright came on for Mullen. She pitched the remainder of the game, collecting three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work, allowing just two earned runs.
- The River Hawks tried to rally late as Stevie Shaak brought home a run on a sacrific fly to center in the fourth. Katelyn Dugery doubled in the fifth to bring in another, while Brooke Allen offered an RBI single later in the frame.
- The Cougars combined for 13 hits, while Susquehanna had 12. Kaylee Smallen, who took over in right field early in the game, batted 2-for-3, while scoring one run. Center fielder Elle Walasavage batted 2-for-2.
MISERICORDIA 10, SUSQUEHANNA 1
- Misericordia opened the scoring in game two with a three-run RBI double in the top of the second to start with an early 3-0 lead.
- The River Hawks would respond in the bottom half of the inning when Amanda Amerman scored off of an Alyssa Mayorca sacrific fly.
- The Cougars would not allow Susquehanna to score another run for the rest of the game while scoring seven runs to close out the game. Two runs came in the top of the third when Misericordia scored two runs off an RBI single.
- Misericordia continued the scoring in the top of the fourth with a ground out that turned brought home a runner, followed by a single to bring the score 7-1.
- The Cougars finished with three runs in the top of the sixth. The last run came after Emalee Mowery, who had three hits and three RBIs for Misericordia, hit an RBI single to score the 10th run of the game.
- The River Hawks posted three hits, one each from Patrone, Amerman and Dugery.
- Amerman pitched the entirety of the nightcap, posting three strikeouts in six innings of work.
