Men's Lacrosse Makes Senior Day Memorable Beating Drew

SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna University men's lacrosse honored their seven seniors prior to Saturday's Landmark Conference matchup against Drew. While the Rangers led early by a 3-1 margin, the River Hawks heated up thanks to Pat McDermott tying a program record with 11 points off seven goals and four assists, including a stretch where he scored five consecutive goals for SU. After leading by one goal to end the second and third quarter, Susquehanna outscored Drew in the final quarter by a 5-1 margin for a 14-9 win.

HOW IT WENT DOWN
  • Susquehanna recognized its seven seniors prior to the start of the game in Garrett Howell, Nick Kennedy, Wallace Pickard IV, Marc Manfredonia, Kieran Koenke, Jimmy Maro and Nick Remund
  • Drew won the opening faceoff and took it to the goal against Susquehanna's starting goalie Will Harcourt. Joey Larmore provided the honor for the Rangers.
  • The River Hawks quickly answered back as Reese Ackerman scored from a McDermott assist.
  • Drew's Yaneik Gallego scored the game's next two goals to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead.
  • Things started to sour for the visitors as they were called for two penalties in the first quarter. The most costly perhaps came from Josef Zengerle, who was called for an illegal body check and a one-minute, non-releasable penalty.
  • The River Hawks took full advantage of his absence, scoring two goals in the extra-man chance as McDermott scored the first goal from Chubenko and then the senior Remund had his chance after a McDermott feed to tie it up at 3-3.
  • Susquehanna opened the second quarter with Quin Michaels from none other than Pat McDermott offering the assist for a 4-3 lead.
  • Gallego tied the game up at 4-4 shortly after, only for Susquehanna to go ahead again when Chubenko scored unassisted to go up 5-4.
  • McDermott scored his second goal of the game off a pass from Drew Filipovits to lead 6-4. Though the Rangers got one back to make the halftime score 6-5, seemingly no one anticipated the big second half McDermott was about to have to help break the game open.
  • Drew tried to change things up by changing goalies from Sawyer Kennedy to Joe Barnish to start the second half.
  • McDermott went on to score the team's first four goals of the second half, including all three of Susquehanna's third quarter goals. Ackerman and Chubenko each assisted on one of them.
  • Drew refused to go away quietly as they matched this with three third-quarter goals as the game went to the fourth quarter with the River Hawks up 9-8.
  • McDermott's fifth goal in this stretch opened the fourth quarter from a pass by the senior Maro to lead 10-8.
  • This triggered an avalanche of goals by the River Hawks as they outscored the Rangers 5-1 in the final quarter.
  • Owen Teaney made it a three-goal game to lead 11-8.
  • Drew's Joseph Carabetta scored several minutes later to cut the lead down to two at 11-9 with less than eight minutes left.
  • It was all Susquehanna from then on as Reese Ackerman scored off a McDermott pass for fourth and final assist of the night.
  • The River Hawks defense continued to perform well. That was until defenseman Ryan Mosier took matters into his own hands. Running with the ball, he drew a penalty flag, which offered him a chance to run upfield and take a shot at the goal. He swept across and bounced one past Barnish for what was deemed to be the dagger to lead 13-9 with 2:48 to go.
  • Of course this day wouldn't have seemed complete if McDermott didn't finish off the scoring himself. He did just that 20 seconds later for his seventh goal and 11th point of the day to tie the program record set by his former teammate Jack Gaillard last year.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Despite Susquehanna's fruitful day shooting, Drew led 57-40 in shots and 30-21 in shots on goal. River Hawks goalie Will Harcourt had himself a day in goal with 21 saves for his first win of the season.
  • McDermott had 11 of the team's shots, with ten of them on goal.
  • Faceoff man Brandon Cash was another key part to the win, winning 20-of-26 midfield battles that got Susquehanna on the scoring end during much of the day.
  • Susquehanna had four extra-man opportunites and scored three goals during those chances.
  • Second to McDermott in the points category was Ackerman and Chubenko with three each. Ackerman had two goals and one assist, while Chubenko had one goal and two assists.
UP NEXT FOR THE RIVER HAWKS
  • Susquehanna puts its 4-2 Landmark Conference record to the test with an eventful week on the road, beginning at Catholic Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Scranton next Saturday at 1 p.m.
  • The River Hawks' final regular season home game will be against Goucher on Wednesday, April 22 at 4 p.m.
