WASHINGTON, DC - Susquehanna men's lacrosse traveled Wednesday to Catholic for an evening Landmark matchup with the Cardinals. In a battle of two top teams in the Landmark who have each claimed victories over each other the last two seasons, it would be the host Cardinals that used an 8-0 scoring run between the second and third quarters to take an 18-9 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Catholic jumped out to a 5-0 lead, an advantage they would take to the end of the first quarter
- Susquehanna got its first goal when Matt Chubenko scored with 13:49 left in the second.
- The Cardinals scored again when Steven Dezelic notched his second goal of the game to reinstate their five-goal lead.
- Nearly three minutes later Jimmy Maro got Susquehanna's next goal on a Gabe Broome assist.
- Susquehanna would not score until midway through the third quarter. By then Catholic ran off eight straight goals towards a firm 14-2 lead.
- Maro scored his second goal of the day to end SU's drought, which sent into motion an exchange of goals between both sides.
- The River Hawks scored the last four goals by Chubenko, Drew Filipovits, Pat McDermott, and Owen Teaney.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Reese Ackerman led with three points on one goal and two assists for SU. He scored during the exchange of goals in the third and assisted two of the team's five fourth-quarter goals.
- McDermott, Chubenko and Maro each finished with two goals on the day.
- Catholic's Alejandro Masferrer was the game's leading scorer with four points on three goals and one assist.
- McDermott reached 50 career goals and now had 97 career points, three away from the century mark.
- Four River Hawk goalies stood in net Wednesday. Will Harcourt got the start, playing the first 30 minutes. and getting 10 saves. Matt Connor, Greyson Stewart and Ian Murphy took over in the second half, combining for four saves.
- Catholic led 50-27 in shots and 32-14 in shots on goal. The Cardinals took advantage of one extra-man opportunity of their two on the day. Susquehanna was 0-for-2 in that category.
