ITHACA, N.Y. — The Susquehanna University field hockey team battled No. 23 Ithaca College on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-1 at Higgins Stadium.
The River Hawks (1-7) held the Bombers scoreless through the opening 15 minutes before Ithaca broke through in the second quarter. The Bombers added goals in the third and fourth quarters to take a 3-0 advantage.
Susquehanna continued to battle and got on the board late in the fourth quarter when
Kiara Koeller found the back of the cage with 2:16 remaining. Koeller's shot was deflected high into the air before finding its way over the Ithaca goalkeeper, giving the River Hawks their lone goal of the afternoon.
How It Went Down
- After a scoreless opening quarter, Ithaca took a 1-0 lead at the 23:02 mark when Brooke Snider converted off a penalty corner with an assist from Ellie Gipe.
- The Bombers extended their advantage to 2-0 just 20 seconds into the second half when Mia Woodard scored on a short-handed breakaway.
- Ithaca added its third goal with just over four minutes remaining in regulation, as Breeah Shaw scored on a long shot following a Susquehanna turnover.
- The River Hawks answered less than two minutes later. Koeller fired a shot that was deflected high into the air and over Ithaca goalkeeper Maeve Clark to put Susquehanna on the scoreboard.
- Susquehanna continued to pressure the Bombers in the closing minutes but could not find another goal.
