SELINSGROVE, PA – The Susquehanna University football team earned a pair of Landmark Conference weekly honors following its 49-23 victory over nationally ranked Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, as senior quarterback
Tommy Wright was named Offensive Player of the Week and senior linebacker
Brayden Nolan earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Wright turned in a career performance against the Blue Jays, completing 15-of-19 passes for 224 yards and a career-high five touchdowns while leading the River Hawks to their third consecutive victory to open the season. Wright accounted for five of Susquehanna's seven touchdowns, connecting with five different receivers for scores. The senior quarterback found
Noah Confer for a 23-yard touchdown in the first quarter before adding touchdown passes to
Drew Hutchins,
Frankie Mroz and
Carter McCauley during a 28-point second quarter. Wright capped his afternoon with a 30-yard touchdown pass to
Jimmy Fusaro in the third quarter. He also added seven rushing yards on five carries as the River Hawks finished with 485 total yards of offense. Through his first three career starts, Wright has completed 52-of-89 passes for 737 yards with ten touchdowns and just one interception.
Nolan made an impact on both defense and special teams as Susquehanna knocked off the Blue Jays. The senior linebacker finished with seven total tackles, including six solo stops and a tackle for loss, helping the River Hawks limit Johns Hopkins to 350 yards of total offense. Nolan made his presence felt throughout the afternoon on special teams, recording three tackles on return coverage to help limit Johns Hopkins' field position and provide a strong defensive presence on kick and punt coverage. His contributions on special teams were part of a complete team effort that helped Susquehanna secure a dominant victory over the nationally ranked Blue Jays. The weekly honor marks the latest recognition for Nolan, who earned Landmark Defensive Player of the Week honors following Susquehanna's season-opening overtime victory at Union. He also earned D3football.com Team of the Week recognition after recording 12 tackles and four tackles for loss against the Garnet Chargers.
The River Hawks, now 3-0 on the season, return to action Saturday, Sept. 26 for their home opener against Christopher Newport at 12 p.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend.
