SELINSGROVE, Pa. — The Susquehanna University field hockey team kept the pressure on all Wednesday afternoon against unbeaten and 15th-ranked SUNY Cortland, but the Red Dragons scored once in the second quarter and once in the third to secure a 2-0 victory over the River Hawks at Sassafras Field.
Susquehanna held Cortland scoreless through the opening 15 minutes, with goalkeeper
Taytum Lombardi making four saves in the first quarter to keep the game deadlocked.
Cortland broke through 3:08 into the second quarter when Tori Peterson found the back of the cage to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 advantage. Susquehanna entered halftime trailing by just one despite Cortland holding a 14-3 edge in shots through the opening 30 minutes.
The Red Dragons added to their lead 10:31 into the third quarter when Kaylee Hughen scored, pushing the advantage to 2-0. Susquehanna continued to battle offensively in the second half, recording nine shots after halftime, but Cortland goalkeeper Sofia Cannistraci turned aside all four River Hawk shots on goal to preserve the shutout.
